Goodbye to Exmouth

After a fantastic time in Exmouth it was time to move on, luckily for us our next destination was only 150km’s down the coast and still fringed Ningaloo Reef.

Just under 2 hours in the van and we arrived in Coral Bay, somewhere we hadn’t originally planned to visit.  It had been recommended by a few people and now that we have time on our hands we decided to give it a try. We quickly found the caravan park recommended by our trusty travel guide book.  The reason the park was so easy to find is simple, Coral Bay seems to only consist of 2 caravan parks, one backpacker’s hostel, one hotel and a really small shopping centre - then it’s the sand/ocean.

Seeing as we’re too late to book onto any of the tours going out today, we packed our snorkelling gear and hit the bay. You know it’s gonna be quite a good place to snorkel when you can see the stingrays just milling about in the turquoise water near shore.

They say this is one of the few places where Ningaloo Reef actually gets so close to the beach that you can swim out to it, so that’s what we tried to do. In fairness all we managed was about 150metres away from shore before letting the current take us back in, but the coral head and marine life were great all the same. I think we’d have to go out another 850metres to get to the main part of the reef, but I guess it’s all still part of Ningaloo Reef.
