I (Wendy) didn't receive the usual 12 long stemmed red roses and chocolates today - but I was brave and happy with Phil just saying 'happy valentines day Woo' in a terrified 'I have done something wrong!' voice... We took the tram into Melbourne. Trams rule the roads and cars and humans have to look out for them - very strange. We passed through the 'arty' and then the 'down and out' areas before reaching Melbourne itself. On the way we saw 3 wedding parties - how sweet to get married on Valentines Day! We did the usual looking at the shops, grabbing some lunch and general walking around for a few hours and got back on the tram at about 5.30. The tram stop was on Collins Street which appears to be a popular place to have your wedding photos taken! We saw a bridal party including 5 bridesmaids in disgusting bright yellow creations - never put a girl larger than me in a tight bright yellow off-the-shoulder dress with netting (?!) to cover her flabby arms... They were having their photos taken in a shop front. At the same time, we saw another bride and groom (no bridesmaids in disgusting dresses this time) standing in the middle of the road in the tram lane having their photos taken there! Just further up there was another bridal party (bridesmaids in silver) having their photos taken in another shop front. The couple in the middle of the road then waited patiently by this couple for their turn to have their photos taken there! These were ordinary shops, nothing special and people were walking past just like normal! This threw us completely, but we were not brave enough to ask any of the wedding parties what the significance of Collins Street was. On the way back we saw more wedding parties having their pictures taken making a grand total of 9 weddings in one day – Valentines Day! All the brides looked absolutely beautiful, of course, but they must have absolutely hated their bridesmaids as there were some awful ‘creations’ out on show!
