Here's where we left from - The Fort DeSoto Boat Ramp

If you are in the area of Clearwater/St. Petersburg, Florida...and you are looking for a little getaway ~ Egmont Key is just a short boat ride from the St. Petersburg area of Florida...{or Fort DeSoto Beach} but it feels like you have traveled much further! Egmont Key is a little island in the Gulf of Mexico that is actually a wildlife refuge. You can only get there by private boat - so make friends with a boat owner and get over there! My boat owner friend was none other than TB's "AirMark"

We left for Egmont Key from Ft DeSoto Boat Launch on Mark's boat on a beautiful, sunny, calm afternoon. It's about a 25 min ride and so totally worth it. When we arrived a Egmont Key, it was a weekday and it wasn't as busy as it is on the weekends.

It such a great place to just sit back and relax and let all the stresses of life just melt away!

We dropped anchor and waded in the gorgeous blue-green water to shore with our beach chairs, umbrella and cooler with refeshments in tow. Here's where I should note: Glass and Adult Beverages are not to be drunk on the Island. But, if you are on the boat it's ok. {We were politely told by a park ranger}.

It's obvious that they keep this island pristine and beautiful. Nothing pains me more that to see a gorgeous, God-made place with papers, bottles and cigarette butts. Anyone who adores traveling and seeing the beauty of this Earth should want to preserve it!

Ahhhhhhhh.....how relaxing to simply kick back and take in the beauty....it is so peaceful and quiet! After our lunch that we had packed of sandwiches that are known as submarines in these parts, we decided to walk the whole island.

The island was used during the Spanish-American War where there was a Fort Dade and there is a lighthouse that was built in 1800's! {For those who are interested in the full history:        http://www.floridastateparks.org/egmontkey/History.cfm    }

Tortoises freely roam the island and we came across many as we checked out the old Fort and pondered what it looked like when there were barracks with a small town complete with a movie theatre.

It's hard to leave this quiet and secluded island, but we packed up our chairs and boating off, vowing to come back soon....as the island got smaller before our eyes....

If you don't know anyone with their own boat ~ you can check out this site that has trips there ~ http://www.tropical-island-getaway.com/
