Pizza and music

To me, New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world. Now I'm here for the second time and still enjoying it.

Pizza and music

Remember Julia Robert's first (?) movie "Mystic Pizza"? It was shot in a town mysteriously named Mystic, in a pizza place the scriptwriter chose because of the 'slice of heaven'-pizza. Well, I was to find out about the mystery. Especially since, after having pizza in many countries, I still think that the best pizza in the world you get in Croatia. It's true, trust me. Mystic itself seems a sleepy little town beautifully located at the shore. It was sunday when we went for a stroll, and it was quite and somewhat deserted, but the little shops, restaurants, a seaport, an aquarium and various museums make it a popular vacation spot. Interested in "Mystic Pizza" and the mysterious pizza? Please, read my review about it.

Remember Lynyrd Skynyrd? Yeah, that's that classic rock band, the one that gave us timeless songs like 'Sweet home Alabama' and 'Freebird'. They were the reason I went to Mystic - Lynyrd Skynyrd had a concert at the "Mohegan Sun Casino", and no way I was to miss that! My gratitude goes to my friend Eric, who knew exactly what he was doing when suggesting it to me (great minds think alike J). The 'Mohegan Sun Arena' is relatively small, and I'm glad it is, because I find that much better than huge stadiums where you can't see the stage. It was awsome!

You can find a review about the "Mohegan Sun Casino" attached.

The pizza that made the movie famous
In 1973 the Zelepos family opened Mystic Pizza, offering a "secret recipe"-pizza which contributed to the long run success. More than a decade later Mystic Pizza caught the eye of screenwriter Amy Jones, who was summering in the area. Ms. Jones chose Mystic Pizza as the focus and setting for her story of the lives and loves of three young waitresses. The movie was filmed on location in Mystic and neighbouring towns. "Mystic Pizza", starring young Julia Roberts, Lili Taylor and Annabeth Gish, was released in 1988 and was a hit. The little pizza shop became a celebrity itself, with customers lining the sidewalk to taste "a slice of heaven". To respond to the demands of customers they even developed a line of frozen pizza that matches Mystic Pizza's recipe, and sell it in stores nationwide.
The place is easy to find since it's located on the main street. It is decorated with film memorabilia, not only from "Mystic Pizza" but also other films. In every room there's a tv where the movie is being played over and over again. There's also a souvenir shop.
Now, what about the food? The pizza? - Delicious! The menu offers a variety of pizzas, salads, soups, burgers, desserts, well, the usual stuff. Is the pizza better than in Croatia? Hm,... it's close enough ;-)
All in all, Mystic Pizza is a nice, cosy place with good food, good service and a friendly staff.

Mohegan Sun Casino
Just a 20-minute-car drive away from the Marriott Mystic Hotel in Groton, CT, is Mohegan Sun Casino, "world-class gaming, great entertainment, endless dining choices, sensational shopping, luxurious hotel accomodations, non-stop nightlife and a relaxing spa", as their brochure tells us. If you arrive by car, you can park it at a huge parking lot, and a shuttle brings you to the casino's entrance (and back).
The reason I was here, was a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert in the Mohegan Sun Arena. But the whole place is impressive. A huge building with all the facilities mentioned above, and since it is owned by an indian tribe (can't recall now which) it is decorated beautifully in that style. They chose names like "Casino of the earth" and "Casino of the sky", a theater is called "Wolf den". The interior truly is breathtaking!
The Mohegan Sun Arena is relatively small, with 10000 seats. But that's okay, since you have a better view at the stage than in stadiums. I do have to mention that the concert was great - after all these years the guys still rock!
Mohegan Sun is pure entertainment, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. You can choose between all kinds of gambling, shopping or dancing. There are restaurants and bars, ice cream and coffee shops. A perfect fun-getaway.
