Old Coast Road

Driving Old Coast Road is the most fun I've had traveling off road ever.  Spectacular views, fun to drive (terrifying actually), and just the right amount of rugged.  We took our Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 which has quadratrack all wheel drive but my parents tagged along behind us in their small rental car and were able to make it through OK (not a comfortable ride for them, though).  Some of our friends have gotten stuck on this road and said they wouldn't go back.  The road is not passable if it has rained recently.
I made the mistake of not bringing our first aid kit and so, of course, I had to accidentally smash my head on our car door for no apparent reason right when we were on the farthest back stretch of the road.  By the time we got near a hospital (I probably should have had stitches) the wound had already started healing and it was too late for stitches.
So, now I have a little souvenir/tattoo on my forehead to remind me of Old Coast Road.
If you have a fear of heights this is NOT the road for you.  I white knuckled it through the whole way pleading with my husband to slow down.  There aren't ANY guard rails and the road frequently turns on the edge of steep cliffs.
However, if you've ever had the privilege of driving Highway 1 through Big Sur and wanted to explore the interior cliffs and mountains then this is the road for you.  The views and the drive are TOTALLY worth the trip.
