The Royal Tombs of Salamis

The old goddess of Aphrodite was born in the waters just on the shore of Cyprus back in ancient times. Today Cyprus has become one of the big charter travel destinations of Europe - so is Aphrodite long gone from the island lost forever - or are there still some trail left behind of the ancient goddess hidden somewhere where the big hotels do not reach her. I will go out looking behind every little rock on the island to figure out if she is still alive out there somewhere hidden away.

One more sight which is described in the Iliad is ancient Royal Tombs of the Salamis. It is just down the road and then a right from the ancient city of Salamis - or it is just to the right if you actually go straight into the small lot next to the street instead of heading right past it and down to an old little convent to the apostle of Barnabas. Who is not actually one of the original apostles but that don’t seem to bother the people of Cyprus too much.

Fortunately the people at the monastery knows where the Royal Tombs of Salamis is - they are just down the road from the monastery in what seems to be a insignificant little lot with a tiny shed which actually housed the museum of the Royal Tombs. The museum is not all that interesting but I might as well have a look around.

The tombs are not all that significant over ground level but there is a bit to look at underground. Including a few skeletons of old horses. It is a bit interesting to go and have a look because I had seen some of the old artifacts from the grave 79 in the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia. There are four of the main graves just outside the museum but the other graves is far away across the field hence I go wandering out over the deserted fields and go out to see the biggest of the tombs.

After the last visit to the graves I go shortly back to Farmagusta to have a quick look inside the main mosque and then it is time to leave the occupied zone of Cyprus - or the Republic of Northern Cyprus depending who you ask about the status of the area.
