I have to admit that my holiday in Limburg an der Lahn was not deliberate (I was visiting a friend), but I was pleasantly surprised by a few aspects of the town.  Sure, it doesn't have the tourist appeal of larger european cities in terms of sights and activities, but it makes up for some of this with its charm and historical authenticity.  A walk through the narrow winding alleys of the old town reveals a well preserved medieval heart comprised of quaint and colourful medieval half-timbered buildings.  Many of these are home to craft stores and boutiques that add to the sense that you've accidentally entered the year 1400 into your time machine...

The town has some dense wooded areas were you can take a stroll into the forest for some quiet contemplation/meditation, or where you can achieve some elevation to take in some lofty views of the town.

Another high point in town is home to the Limburger Dom, a colourful Romanesque church perched above the river Lahn.  It can be seen from many vantage points within the town and is the main 'sight' of Limburg.

During December there is a small christmas market of around a dozen stalls.  Small is the operative word, but I at least found my favourites -  Glühwein (a traditional warm spicy red wine),  Crêpes (thin pancakes served with.... you name it), and Currywurst (need I explain?).  Mmmm Currywurst......  Ahem yes...I shall continue...

I can hear you hardcore tourists enquiring..."but what is there to DO in Limburg?"  Well thanks to some local knowledge it was discovered that this lovely historical community does harbour a bowling alley and a nightclub/disco (called "Limburg Musicpark").  So after taking in all the medieval marvels you can indeed shake your groove thing into the wee hours....

As a tourist you would be unlikely to spend more than a day here, but if you are interested in experiencing a well preserved time capsule from medieval Germany it could be a day well spent.
