after another early start we drive for a bit before finally clapping eyes on uluru. i nearly peeed my pants! really, i was that excited! to me this is what i thought of when i thought of australia. and i was about to get up close and personal with it! honestly, i cant describe how excited i was and how much i smiled- just ask marc!
so it was another half hour before we actually got to the rock. i had decided ages ago that, out of respect (the aboriginal owners ask that you dont climb it) i wasnt going to climb, but marc was. so we both set off on the 10km base walk. and if you ask me it was heaps quieter, more interesting (and easier!) than doing the climb. it took us about 2 and a half hours. its so weird being so close to it, you kind of forget its that big rock on all the postcards.
so i chill out in the car while marc goes to climb up. after half hour or so i spot him (with me binoculars!) coming back down again. its hard to explain but the climb is very steep, slippy and dangerous. there is a chain that you can hold on to some of the way, the rest is up to you! some of it is so steep that you have to scrabble up. and coming down, lots of people come down on their bums! it was scary enough watching marc climb up , so when he is coming down i dont know why and think all sorts! i just kept my fingers crossed that i wouldnt see him roll of the side! thankfully he made it down ok- his asthma had got the better of him.
we drive to the resort about 15 mins away and set up the tent then drive back in plenty of time to watch the sunset. it was absolutely awesome. the rock actually does go as red as what it looks like in all the photos!
