A Christmas Trip to Remember
It was supposed to be a simple trip to Saskatoon, we had booked the Travelodge Hotel with built in water slides ... the main surprise for the girls but everything was going to change ... totally unexpected and unprepared for what was to come!
We took off from Calgary, Alberta around 2pm and we had planned to be in Saskatoon by 10:30pm with a couple of stops ... I couldn`t stop taking pictures as we left Calgary, Alberta of all the town we passed through ...
The sun was setting and I finally put the camera down & relaxed in the car with my family enjoying the Christmas CD that my 14 yr old daughter had burned.
Suddenly in Hanna our car`s engine`s light appeared and the car started to slowly lose momentum ... Dan quickly turned the car around and drove it to the ESSO Gas Station .
.. on Christmas Eve, now 6:30pm, everyone is beginning to settle in and besides it was a balmy -32 degrees celcius out ... Dan let the car cool (freeze LOL) and then turned the engine half hour later ... it turned over, so with some people at the gas bar saying "it could simple be water in our lines ..." Dan took off but drove the car at 90kms/hr instead of 110kms/hr hoping we'd make it to our destination of SaskatoonTwo hours passed and we passed this small town of Kindersley ... it was so cold and desolate ... hardly a car in sight, then the car's engine light appeared again and the engine turned off and Dan glided slowly onto the shoulder of the road so that our car would be safe from oncoming traffic ... He immediately turned the hazards on and within 30 seconds a truck stopped .
.. a man walked over to see what the problem was and noticed the 3 girls in the back ...He (the trucker) recommended, with the weather so cold, that we hop in his truck and he'd drive us to the Kindersley Inn to keep warm ... the truckers wife was holding a platter; I could tell they were on there way to friends or family to celebrate Christmas eve ... we thanked them and then began calling our Mom's and Dan's cousin who resides in Saskatoon.
Dan and I knew we had to tell the girls that the plans for the Travelodge had to be cancelled ... we both felt so bad for swimming is a reward, treat, excitement for them and that FUN was pulled from under them as quickly as we had made and booked them ... I felt so guilty but we knew in order for us to get the car working, rent a vehicle, gas, etc.
something this Christmas Season had to be sacraficed ...We (sorry Santa) did surprise the girls with 3 digital cameras ... we have to start them early into the world of photography ... I must say they had no idea we'd buy them that ...
We rented a vehicle and on the 27th of December we returned to Calgary ... but we made sure we removed everything from our KIA and left a note for the mechanics this Monday to read and hopefully tomorrow on Monday December 29th, 2008 we'll receive a call with a full diagnosis of what's up with our 2003 KIA ...
Here's the pics I took along the way to saskatoon and then back again to Calgary
