Having a Cajun / Creole dinner, yummy!!! :P
December 29, 2008
We got a reservation for dinner at one of the most popular restaurants of New Orleans' cuisine. Blair got a table for 4 people. Addie would pick me up at 7pm in order to be there by 7:30pm, time of our reservation. Addie came on time, but the drive wasn't as long as expected, so we were there at 7:15pm. No problem. The atmosphere of this place was awesome. Although it was Monday, the place was packed. So good we had a table, yay!
We went to the bar and got a glass of wine each. We were just chatting at same time I was looking a man who cleaned the oysters and serve them raw... would I try them? I have already done that once and liked it, but maybe it wasn't the best idea for the day before traveling. While we were there I saw a familiar face. It was Vicky. She also works with us. Hey Vicky! She told me Blair and Osvaldo were parking and coming. Oh! a small problem. Blair didn't change the reservation and now we had to wait almost 1hr to get a table for 5, pffffff.
Actually that wasn't an inconvenient at all, since we stayed at the bar having wine and chilling out. This restaurant has been visited by famous people and their pictures were hanging on the walls, mmm, like my idea of TB's pics hanging on the HQ's walls, haha. The wine was tasty and so the company. I didn't realize what time was it, until they let us know our table was ready and waiting for us, how nice!
The bar is so informal, but the dining room is serious and quiet... well, that was the first impression, wrong! Blair asked for a bottle of wine while we were thinking about what to order. Our waitress came back quickly and was really nice. She even laughed when Osvaldo told her that she looked like Harry Potter's sister, haha. Well, we have been checking the menu, but no idea what to order. Blair was the expert, so he ordered the appetizers. We shared the Fried Calamaris and Capresse Salad. I wasn't eating the calamaris and Blair noticed it. So he asked me, why I didn't try them. I should do it... "well, I'd love to do it... but I'm allergic to them..." "Come on, Yadi! You should have told me that..." I told Blair not to worry. I'll survive with the salad plus I wanted to save room for the entree, hehe.
Our waitress came again and we were ready to order our entrees. Osvaldo, Vicky and Addie got the signature dish of the restaurant: "The Original Pascal's BBQ Shrimp" which is prepared in a spicy and tangy sauce. Blair ordered the "Veal Marsala" and I, the "Ala Manale Salad". Osvaldo wanted to try the "Turtle soup". So I ordered a cup to share. I tried this soup once before in New Orleans and liked it ;)
A few minutes later, our waiter came with the dishes, but before starting to eat. The 3 people who'd get the BBQ Shrimp should wear their uniforms: a bib! so fun! Before the waitress left us, we ordered more wine and water. The food was delicious!!! Blair cooked the BBQ Shrimp once at his house when I was there and he wanted me to try the ones at the restaurant and compare them with the ones he cooked. Well... what can I say? Blair is a terrific cook!!! Well, we were full... could barely move, but we couldn't help it and
We ordered desserts, but to share! haha. I got the Caramel Custard, which was like a flan, nothing too heavy. Blair got the Bread Pudding, Osvaldo, Vicky and Addie a slice of cheesecake each of them. Ok, it was official we were too full... Time to order the check and get ready to leave, although none of us wanted to walk, haha.
Addie drove me back to the hotel. I had a flight to catch tomorrow at noon. Blair would come for me in the morning... I was so glad I packed everything before leaving. Now I could just go straight to bed and sleep... I was so tired...

Home of the original BBQ Shrimp - Pascal's Manale Restaurant
Although I have been in New Orleans quite a few times, I haven't ever tried the BBQ Shrimp in one of the most traditional restaurants of the city. I have already tried them, but home made. And this time I would compare the home made versus the famous ones from this place.
Ok, now about the location. First of all, I had to say that it got flooded after Katrina, but extensive renovations restored the interior to just as it always was, down to the photos on the walls. Such a relief to return to hearty, traditional N'Awlins fare, in a hearty, traditional N'Awlins setting. And there's nothing wrong with that, as long as you don't expect anything more. Well, the exterior doesn't look very impressive, but the interior sure does. The walls are covered with pics of the celebrities and politicians that visited this place, besides pics of the restaurant among the years. This restaurant is an institution in New Orleans, which opened its doors back in 1913.
This restaurant has built its reputation on famous BBQ shrimp. It's a must trying it here. But be ready to get messy, haha, although they will give you a bib, hehe. This place is always packed, so be sure to make a reservation if you don't want to wait for your table, but if you have to wait, don't worry. They have a good selection of wines and the bar is very nice and cozy. Also while you are waiting you can try the freshly-shucked oysters from the raw bar.
The specialty of the house are the BBQ Shrimps, but they have other dishes, which are also tasty. Menu selections include fine seafood, delicious steak, and Italian specialties. They are even allowed to have their own culinary vocabulary, since they are one of the foundation restaurants of the city. Oh! If it's possible save space for the bread pudding, delicious!
The bar area is loud and always crowded, while the dining room is quiet. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They are fun and will help to make your visit unforgettable
