Going with Dave and meeting up with Deats in Istanbul, flying down to Bodrum, then working our way up the coast of Turkey.

Empty Bodrum

Arrived in Bodrum but there are very very few people here. Most shops are closed down. Streets are empty except for lots of stray dogs and cats. As Phil said "we're 6 months too late, 6 months too early"

at least it's not snowing or raining here! and the city itself is very pretty at night, lots of stars and a picturesque marina.

we will probably rent a car tomorrow and drive around the surrounding areas

It is actually nice to hear that there are still times when it is not swamped with people...I wish you will find something interesting for you to do.

unique museum in a memorable setting
There isn't a whole lot to do in Bodrum during the off-season, but the Museum of Underwater Archaeology probably ranks as the top attraction.

Contrary to what you might think, it's not underwater, which would make it cooler by orders of magnitude. Instead, most of the exhibits deal with artifacts recovered from the numerous shipwrecks around Bodrum and Turkey.

The museum is set in the Castle of St. Peter's, an ancient fortress built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 1400s. Many of the exhibits are outdoors, while walking along the walls of the castle, you can experience views of the ocean and the harbor.

The Lonely Planet sings high praises of this museum as an example of how all museums should be. I wouldn't go that far, but it's a good museum with some interesting exhibits.

My favorite exhibit, by far, was the "glass room" -- a dark room with different glassware lit up with different colored lights. A lot of the glassware is exquisite in detail and remarkably well preserved.
