Escaping the snow via a loooong flight.

I succesfully made it out of Wisconsin. We had been getting pummeled by regular snow storms every 2-4 days for the last few weeks, so my escape was certainly put in jeopardy. My hopes were certainly bouyed by the 3+ hour layover I had in Atlanta, and as it turned out my flight from Madison was only about 40 minutes late leaving anyway.
I parked it in the Delta Crown Room lounge for a few hours in Atlanta and scarfed a load of munchies with a bloody mary chaser. While waiting for my flight to leave, I had that horrible "I forgot something!" revelation. My International Driving Permit and hotel discount card were laying somewhere near my computer, doing me absolutely no good. I made a quick phone call to my roommate to see if could at least scan and email them to me, and he said he would give it a try.
Once on board the plane we sat at the gate for over 90 minutes before leaving! Then the 13 hour 30 minute flight was uneventful. I watched Baby Mama (as recommended by my sister), listened to the iPod, and slept as much as possible. As we neared Dubai I realized that I hadn't even gotten up to use the facilities the whole flight. Wow! 15 plus hours. And I didn't even really have to go.
The passport control and baggage claim went well, and I bought a bottle of rum and some Cuban cigars at the duty free before getting my rental car. They didn't seem too interested in my IDP, so I was very relieved. The extra insurance needed for taking the car into Oman took a while, but I was soom on my way.
I fired up my GPS in the cute little Toyota Yaris and made it easily to the nearby Crowne Plaza. The place is fabulous, and they even upgraded my room and put me on the top (19th) floor.
The hotel is situated along Dubai Creek, so I took a little walk looking for food. Most things had closed at 11pm, but I did find a Charley's Subs at the mall next door. Yummy!
Tomorrow, I will do my best to check out the old town area of Dubai.
