The Tip of Borneo? Everyone wants to go there. Well, I have read about it and seen pictures. And that sparked my interest, and I made a trip of it. Will it live to its hype? Will I recommend people to visit the Tip of Borneo?
The Tip of Borneo aka "Tanjung Simpang Mengayau" in Malay aka "Tanjung Sampang Mangazou" in Rungus, the natives to Kudat (Tip Junction Battle). According to Rungus folklore, this was the site of a fierce battle fought by their forefathers, defending Rngus territory against invading enemies. The fleet of Ferdinand Magellan, on its famous voyage to circumvigate the globe, was said to have stoppred here for 42 days to repair their ships.
We booked in to The Kudat Golf and Marina Resort for the night, and thought we might explore the town for Seafood for our meals.
It took us about a 3 hour drive from KK to Kudat. The weather wasn't great. It was cloudy, and started to drizzle when we arrived the Tip. Managed to take a few shots. Because of the weather, I couldn't take the sunset. I was disappointed in this respect. At this stage, I reckon that the best way for tourist to experience the Tip of Borneo is through a tour operator. I guess because the Tip of Borneo is not a destination, but a site. For a site like the Tip of Borneo you'd be content to be on a tour bus, and have the tour guide say to you "On your left, The Tip of Borneo, and on your right, coconut trees". Independent travelers will probably find it too much of an effort for too little a benefit.
We then went to this home restaurant, located just next to the fish market for lunch.
For dinner, we went to what seemed to be the best restaurant in Kudat. My reasons, there was a wedding reception at the restaurant when we arrived and it was one of the few open restaurants in the town. We had steamed fish with ginger and spring onions, clams, crispy skin chicken and stir fried morning glory with dried shrimp paste. This set us back MYR 130, however its still cheap by any standard. The food was tasty and the portions were double that of lunch.
On our return, we stopped over at 1 Borneo, a new addition to the many malls in Kota Kinabalu for a quick peak.
If you asked me if I enjoyed my trip, I would answer without hesitation "Yes". If you asked me if I would make another trip on a better day to take the sunset at the Tip of Borneo, I would say, "why waste the time". If you asked me if I would recommend you to go to the Tip of Borneo, I answer you without hesitation "Yes. But what for"?
