Ah the Broken family band i think this may well be the last time i go see these boys for quite some time as this is about the 18th time I've seen them live in the past two years! Although i still really enjoy seeing them live i'm not so keen on their new material, they're losing their alt-country edge that had originally captivated me.

The venue tonight was Cargo a really nice small to medium venue situated under a bridge, so the whole building is made up of large archways made from old brick. I've been here a few times and always try to get here early as they also have a really nice Mexican restaurant, Mmm tortillas and burritos yummy. They also use the place as art gallery where they display graffiti artists work.

The line up tonight is as follows>   The Miserable Rich.

Cargo
Jeremy Warmsley.  The Accidental.  The Broken Family Band. The Accidental. And the Broken Family Band.

We didn't see Miserable witch as me and my three friends were still busy stuffing are faces when he came on. We did see Jeremy Warmsley who was covering 69 love songs by magnetic fields, I've heard of the magnetic fields but haven't heard the album so couldn't say if they were good covers or not but it was very pleasant anyway. Next up was they Accidental who i had never heard of before tonight but was really pleased to have discovered them, they played some really nice folk tunes that had a bit of a funky edge to them. They have two singers a black guy with great hair and voice and a young lady with a more unusual voice which was also nice.

Once they had left the stage we expected  the broken family band to be up next but confusingly a two guys on with a ukulele and the other with a violin took came on stage and started to play. It wasn't until the guy with the Ukulele started to sing that it hit me who he was......"Who" i hear you cry. Darren Hayman!! "Who" I hear you cry. From Hefner!! "Who" i hear you cry. Oh forget it. This was the highlight of the gig for me i was once a massive fan of Hefner they were responsible for some of my favourite tracks. He only played three tracks but the last was a classic Hefner song called the greedy ugly people which ends with the lines "Love don't stop no wars, don't stop no cancer,
It stops my heart" he repeated this about five times and then the crowd started singing along with him, quietly at first but gaining confidence each time the line was repeated, eventually it seemed like the whole world was singing along it was simple beautiful i almost cried.

How were the Broken family band going to live up with this, to be honest they didn't in my opinion. Mr Steven Adams(lead singer) was on good form as usual providing funny banter in between tracks and he broke his amp. The rest of the band all played really well,so why didn't they blow me away as they normally do? The reason is down to the fact they only played songs from their last two albums which have moved away from their normal alt-country or sometimes referred to as faux country and they seemed to be heading into indie rock. The reason i feel in love with this band in the first places was that there was no one else out there making music quite like them. They've moved from being a very good alt-country band to being a average indie band, but i'm sure the masses will find their new stuff more accessible, a great shame in my opinion.
