Only one day here as well, owing to our delayed arrival. I had to cut out our planned Hill Country drive as well. The hotel is perfectly situated on a hill overlooking the main town surrounding the central lake. The view makes for some nice pics at sunrise. Right about the time the sun crested, a mob of about 100 monkeys stormed the hotel, swinging from balcony to balcony to break glasses, steal silverware, loot belongings and cause the maximum amount of chaos possible. They're small but are surprisingly aggressive. Fortunately, the 'Beware of Monkeys' sign on the glass sliding door convinced me not to leave anything for them to plunder, but looking through the glass, we got a good show of their wanton destruction.
The main thing to see in this town is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, said to contain, you guessed it, a tooth of budha's.
On the way back to Colombo, we stopped at the small 14th century Hindu-Buddhist Gadaladeniya temple (were the builders covering their bets over which faith to believe in?) The entire entryway was intricately carved from a single boulder and the paintings inside were nice. On the way out we got hit up by a local artisan to buy some of his works. We ended up buying a small piece from him that is hanging on our kitchen wall today.
