moraccans and their shisha

One of the great arabic traditions is shisha smoking.  In the west it is usally called the hooka pipe, but in Morocco it is the shisha and proved to be the funnest and best way to have a serence conversation with moroccans.  One of the things we did was go into town with our guide hussian who would then take us to his friends house (people our age) and we would smoke the shisha, and yadda yadda yadda.  We always had serene conversations about US music from the 1980's, and we got the impression that they liked to slip us a little bit of hasish.

Meanwhile one night we had a change of plans (none of the photos in this entry are from this night,... no photos allowed!):  And we ended up in a secluded closed club / bar with these four old moroccan dudes.

What followed was one of the most interesting nights of my life.  This conversation took place in the summer of 2004 when the US / arab world relations were at an all time low.  The US invasion of Iraq was starting to fail and the story just broke of US soldiers torturing Iraqis.  Also in the arab world (specifically saudi arabia) but also in Morocco americans were being attacked and there were a number of high profile beheadings of US captives, there was also a minor terrorist atrack against western interests in casablanca, but thats another story.  The point being tensions were high and the embassy reps gave us huge speaches about safety, and being in a secluded club is odd.

The sides were me and my three american friends (one who was actually from egypt so she spoke Arabic fluently), and on the other 4 old arabic dudes, later we would find out that they were the bar owner, the army commander, brother of the king of morocco (he has like 100 of those) who was some sort of politician, the fire chief, and of course hussien to moderate.

The night started off with each group being seperate, smoking our own pipes. And then the soldier took out a pistol and slammed it on the table.  He liked our reaction of a semi high "what the fuck was that" *a little hasish in our pipes of course*.  They start laughing and we quickly became friends.  So we started talking and we had the most intimate conversation of no-no political topics, they talked about the shame felt of the terrorism against the USA and we talked about how we felt stupid about invading Iraq because our president was an idiot.  They quickly agreed and it was amazing.  The next topic was Israel, and how basically a lot of the natives were kicked off their land and our now people without a state (palestine don't issue passports easily), so they can't even leave.  Of course we talked about our culture, speicifically the crimes of the German Nazis, and how creating Israel was a stop gap solution,  So what we did agree on so many things it was ridicolous.! Only if every American and dude in the middle east could have this conversation!
