The Big Thaw
April 30, 2008
After nearly continuous, daily snowfalls from October 2007 through May of 2008, I planned a four day escape to Phoenix to thaw out my feet.
Allegiant Air had a 2 day sale with non-stops from Green Bay to Mesa for a ridiculously cheap rate of $150 round trip. So without skipping a beat, I snatched the deal and deserted my city for the desert.
I was so surprised to see just how many water features and founds abounded from the sand of the desert. Colorful flowers and the sound of cascading water warmed not only my feet but my soul, too.
How ridiculous of me to head to Phoenix and NOT take my golf clubs! I will not make that mistake again!! Golf courses are everywhere and each as beautiful as the next.
I stayed at the Arizona Grand Resort shortly after it re-opened after renovation. The suite was lovely and comfortable. Whether I looked from the patio or the doorway, I could see and hear fountains in every direction! With massive red geranium planters defining the umbrellaed chairs, I was in bliss as I sat and enjoyed my 6am coffee blanketed by warm temperatures, even at that early hour. It was April and I was fortunate enough to go there when it was 98 degrees~! The hot sun felt absolutely great and a very welcome change from the 9 months of my own fridgid temperatures back home.
The Oasis Waterpark on site was a blast! A long and enjoyable lazy river was the perfect entertainment for me as I beached myself on a lounge chair in the sun. I watched people float by for hours on end and it was an ever changing scene. I also enjoyed the 8 story water slide~ I feel lucky that I made the height requirement! I am not a screamer on rides, I love the rush, however, when going down the water slide the slight amount of water under your back as you quickly glide down the slide makes you hydroplane and if felt as though I was flying off the slide.... I might have screamed..... but am in denial.
The restuarants on this property were all terrific and each had a theme. Mexican, barbecue, Asian, fushion, and American. Of course, I had to try them all and I was certainly NOT disappointed.
Though there was a new section of the hotel being built when I was there, it was generally a peaceful experience. The construction was fairly well hidden behind decorated walls and far enough away that they equipment was hardly audible.
One big thing to mention, if you are using Allegiant Air to head to Phoenix, please note that they fly into the Gateway Airport, you need to know that renting a car will be your best bet to get around. This is a tiny airport and is far away from the main city and most of the resorts and hotels. We took a shuttle from the airport to the Arizona Grande Resort. This ride was about $40 per person, $80 for two, for one way. We then took a hotel shuttle back to the airport at the end of the trip and it was another $80.00 - we could have rented a trip for the four day vacation it would have been the same price with a whole lot more flexibility.
I had a great time in Phoenix as I basked in the 98 degree days.

Rustler's Rooste where you slide to your table
This was an interesting, themed restaurant close to the Arizona Grand Resort.
A short (15 minute) walk up a steep hill, the peaked lights from this restaurant can be seen for mile and miles.
Specializing in good old fashioned barbecue and rattlesnake, guests can drink beer from a mason jar, the take slide from the upper floor to the lower floor, and, when seated by the window, have sweeping views of Phoenix.
Great seating for large groups, a balloon guy was walking around to every table with kids creating some pretty amazing balloon "things" such as a spiderman hat, a bicycle, and balloon shoes. Very original!
Pricing was average - a good sized hunk of prime rib was about $28.00, appetizers (too big for one person) were about $7.00, and a large selection of entrees' filled the menu.
Servers were dressed in cowboy gear..... and with the restaurant being so busy, servers were a bit short with us.
A long horned bull was corralled outside, which seemed a bit inhumane to me being such a tiny area, but I get the point of it.
It's a fun place to visit and a must-see for tourists.

Arizona Grand Resort with Waterpark, beautiful and relaxing in the off-season.
I stayed here at the end of April, beginning of May, which is their off-peak or shoulder season. Room rates were quite good at this time, around $179 a night. (Peak season is $399 and up).
The only thing to watch for when booking is to notice that they tack on an extra $20/night for a resort fee, as this hotel has a water park in it.
Suites were beautiful and comfortable. It had just re-opened under the new name when I stayed there, so it was crisp and clean.
Close to Sky Harbor but VERY far from Williams Gates Airport (Allegiant Air's primary airport and an $75 shuttle ride back to the airport).
The property is beautifully landscaped with water features in every direction. In addition to the water park there were a number of smaller pools; some family, some adult. Colorful with yellow umbrellas and bright bougainvillea flowers.
A lovely golf course was on site, the pro-shop and club house were under construction at the time but were not friendly to women golfers. They carried no women's apparel and did not appear to have women's clubs to rent for the day.
Four great restaurants on the property (at least). One was high end Japanese, one was Mexican, one was Barbecue, and one very high end gourmet, each a little bit of a hike from the hotel.
Signage to navigate the web of hotel pods was difficult, so I needed to ask for directions how to find the coffee cafe' in the morning.
The water park was terrific. Plenty of space to lounge, a large lazy river, waterfalls, and 2 huge water slides, one of which was 8 stories high!
Overall, this hotel scored very high for me as a wonderful place to thaw out from my long winter back home.

Aunt Chilada's - Margaritas As Big as Your Head
This great little Mexican place stands in a building that was built in 1890 and today serves up great food, service, and fun.
You get quite a bit of food for not a lot of money. Their premium margaritas are very large and delicious. Food platters are enough to share between two people.
The restaurant sits at the bottom of the hill near the Arizona Grand Resort and is always busy. A small color decor makes it fun and entertaining. The outdoor patio is quicker seating, and a strolling guitar serenade has been offered for twenty plus years on the weekends. **Note: patio is very dimly lit by one candle on each table, so hoard the candles if you see empty tables, it's the only way you will be able to see your menu!
This really is a fun little place to check out for quality food and a great time.
