In 2007 I took a tour of Costa Rica with Caravan Tours. It was an all inclusive tour and lasted 10 days. The guide was very knowledgeable and made all of us feel comfortable. There were about 25 of us in a bus with seats for 44 so we had lots of room. Every other day was a travel day. The other days were a local sight seeing day. The accommodations were great. There was plenty to do without paying for extra tours. The only thing that I did which was not included was to do a Zip Line Tour for one half day. All other tours were included in the price.
We started in San Jose where we spent two nights at the Barcelo Placio Hotel. It was very nice. The food was great.
Day 2, we toured San Jose and Poas Volcano. You could not see anything from the rim of the volcano due to the clouds which are there most of the time.
The view of San Jose from the National Museum was great.
Day 3, Travel day from San Jose to Tortugero National Park. We stopped on the way to take an aerial tram tour of the rain forest. It was wet and ponchos were recommended. Several people got their digital cameras wet and they were ruined. The experience was good overall. We were able to witness a fight between two three Toed Sloths. I was told that this was very unusual.
Day 4 toured Tortugero National Park. This is a must see if you are able to get to Costa Rica.
It is a good example of ecotourism. The local people which were living off the land and consuming the natural resources are now living off the tourist and protecting the natural resources. Everyone in the area is associated with the tourist industry. The animals, birds, and critters are well worth the trip just to see them. The Jesus Lizard can actually walk on water.
Day 5 travel to Fortuna
Day 6 Cano Negro tour on the Frio River had a lot of birds and we were able to see Blonde, the only known blonde Howler Monkey. It was well worth the time to take the tour. That evening we went to Areanal Volcano. The hot springs are very well finished off with water temperature from scalding hot to tepid. There are a number of swim up bars. A very nice place to visit.
Day 7 travel to Jaco and visit cloud rain forest.
Day 8 Zip Lining and visit Manual Antonio National Park. The Zip Lining Tour was not included in the tour package but was well worth the cost. It took one half day and I recommend going with a well recommended outfit. You are up in the air and depending on the outfitters to keep you safe. Our group had a young girl about eight and a senior citizen of 75 years. So any one can do it if they can stand heights. I felt safe all the time and had a great experience.
Day 9 back to San Jose and coffee plantation tour.
Day 10 depart.
I had a great time and would recommend the tour to anyone.
