Moomba Waterfest 2007

Melbourne Over Coffee is a 'sticky' blog of mine - one that I will add to intermittently - that will delve into the world of inner Melbourne. Find out what a Melburnian gets up to, which festivals are worth seeing, why exactly Australian football (or 'footy' as it is known here) has a knack for making us go crazy, and most importantly, where to find (good) food. Welcome to a year packed with festivities, sports, and fashion. Welcome to the sporting capital of Australia: Melbourne.

Moomba Waterfest 2007

Moomba was kicked off the calendar last year because of a little thing called the Commonwealth Games. Moomba was back in full swing this year, with events both in the city and in Docklands.

For those of you who don't know, Moomba is a water festival that Melbourne holds every year (save last year, as I explained earlier). It's a little bit ironic considering the water shortages, but hey!

Activities and events are split up into those that are on river and those that are off river.

On the river this year were the usual wakeboarding competitions, waterskiing competitions and dragon boat racing. They also had some interesting races where you race a bath tub down the Yarra.

Off river, the banks of the Yarra River were lined with the usual carnival rides, only this year they were more intense. On one ride, if you sat in the right place, you would be going at 180k's an hour when the ride reached full swing! Scary stuff.

And at night there were fireworks.

All in all, a lovely festival that was much the same as it has been in previous years.
