California Wines at Hacienda Del Sol

We all appreciated the 2005 Truchard Syrah, do you hear 'Recommended'?

I particularly don't like California wines, nothing against California but I never seem to get the right wine. I always try something three times before I can say I don't like it; I don't like California wines. Having said that, you will probably wonder why I decided to attend a Wine tasting that included only California wines. Do you know that thing in your head that tells you that something might have changed? After 6 years of not drinking California wines, I decided perhaps I might be surprised. Our Tucson based wine tasting group leader Lee, decided to invite the group to an exclusive wine tasting at Hacienda Del Sol on a Tuesday night. There were three particular wines;

  • 2007 Dutton Goldfield Chardonnay (White), from Russian River Valley, California. $85.00 a bottle.
    Me and the chardonnay I did not like
    It was reduced to $50.00 for the wine tasters who wanted to buy one. Can you believe how ridiculous this price is for this wine? I did not like it because it had an after taste to it. The people that were in charge of the wine tasting did not seem to know much about the wine themselves.
  • 2007 Dutton Goldfield Pinot Noir (Red), from Russian River valley, California. $90.00 a bottle, reduced to $60 if you wish to buy one for the night. I think that if this wine matured enough, it might make for a great table wine. I did not particularly care for it either. Same producer as the chardonnay above.
  • 2005 Truchard Syrah, from Carneros, California. $70 a bottle, reduced to $45 for the night. I must be honest, this was the only wine I thought was worth the trouble. Still not what I would choose for diner or a social evening, but if I had to choose, this would be it. It was a little older and had a refined taste with a touch of spice. For the price they were offering, I would buy it ten years later.

Wine, wine and more wine; the company was great and Haciend Del Sol is a great restaurant. My review is below.

Will do. Thanks Carl. Malbecs are on my top list for Argentine wines. I will check out the wine forum. I still favour South African and Italian wines. Today we will be having a French Bordeaux for dinner at a friend's house. It has a custom blend of 60% merlot and 40% sauvignon. It is 10 years old so it should be good.
