Will get back to this once I have finished the busy period of my degree. VERY incomplete at the moment, sorry! Introducing sights, landmarks and things to do in London and some interesting places further afield

Chiddingfold - most sought-after place to live in Surrey

Chiddingfold is a small village near Guildford. Apparently it is the most sought-after place to live in Surrey, which is the most sought-after county to live in the UK. It's very quaint with lots of cute cottages and other buildings with character. It also has the famous Crown pub, but unfortunately that seems to have gone a bit downhill since its best days... see my review of the Crown Inn.

There's the famous village green, which attracts thousands of people for Guy Fawkes Night in November, which commemorates the fact that a guy called Guy Fawkes did NOT blow up the parliament. Hehee, the British are funny, making something their national holiday that didn't happen. Anyway, people start building a huge pile for a bonfire several weeks in advance and the torchlit ceremony on the actual night is well worth a look.

The Crown Inn is a pub in Chiddingfold that has quite a bit of history to it. Because it is several centuries old it is in a really beautiful half-timbered building. Apparently, in the past even the monarch stayed there on occasion, although I have forgotten which King or Queen it was.

Unfortunately, all this history doesn't really help the place very much today. The tables are sticky even after they were wiped and the food is absolutely atrocious! I am shocked to have to say this but the burgers in McDonalds are better than those served here. At least in McDonalds they TRY and put some lettuce in. The staff seem a bit confused, either not noticing you at all, or constantly asking you whether you want something even though you told their three colleagues already that you would appreciate more time.

What is good though is an Irish band (called "The Hanging Tree") that sometimes comes to play. It's definitely worth seeing and as long as you only have a drink it should be fine. Usually the place is packed when they are playing, especially (obviously) on St Patrick's Day.
