Roof from another world
May 2, 2008
Day two. No idea what we were going to do, so we just strolled around, wandering. Thats the life of a citywalker. Just walk around and see what comes up.
We discovered a local university and we slipped inside to take a peak. It had a nice courtyard inside. There were also some monumental buildings around the place. Well, in Milan, there are monumental buildings all over the place! I have never in my life visited so many churches and at the end of this day I experiences a sort of church overkill. There was a very old one as well, dating from the Roman times, St Ambrose Church. This is a huge and beautiful church. While we were inside, suddenly a funeral started. It was all a bit uncomfortable for us (strange that they didn't sent the tourists away) so we hastily quitted the church and took a last peek at its court.
Churches a-plenty! There were two more churches on our route. The first one beautifully decorated and for a totally different time than the Roman St Ambrose. The second one was Saint Mary of the Graces ('Santa Maria delle Grazie'). This one houses the famous painting Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. We decided to take a look at the painting, but it turned out you have to book months in advance! Unfortunately we did not had another 2 weeks to wait for Da Vinci, so with a sigh we continued to our walk. Maybe another time.
Milan also boasts an enormous citadel with high and heavy brick walls. Definately a highlight of the city. Its large main gate is always visible while you walk along the shopping streets. But the biggest sight of all remains the Duomo! Today was the day after Labor's Day, so we could finally enter the stairway to the roof!
Standing on the roof of the Duomo remains one of my most memorable travel experiences. What a strange, wonderful place! Only from the top can you truly admire the craft gone into the shaping of this church. Transcendent.
This I can recommend to everybody.
Oh. Yes. When came back down, there was a big happening on the plaza. It turned out there were some local celebrities in the rooms of the shopping mall. Girls were screaming and the sky was filled with electricity. I bluntly forgot the tv show they were supposed to play in (if anybody knows, please let me know. They were present in Milan at may 2nd).
