First meet-up with Peter,my future son-in-law!
Peter living in Biarritz(800 km from Lyon) since several years and doing a lot of trips for his job and family(his parents live in Cape Town South Africa),we had never met our future son-in-law (my daughter Bérengère and Peter are engaged since only few weeks).
After an Air France flight(with an only 45 minutes delay!) have you noticed dear Buddies, that,as a perfect froggie,I'm always grumbling ,about food,planes..!we were accomodate in Peter's house on a sunny Saturday morning and went to do some shopping in the Col(pass) of Ibardin, located at the Spanish border where you can buy, since 50 years, petrol, wines, beers, spirits, cigarettes and food cheaper than in France.
I did there a pic of the Rhune mountain, the highest peak of the westerner Pyrenees(900m).This mountain ,located on the border between France and Spain, where the traditional Basque provinces of Labourd and Navarra meet,is covered in dolmens and other neolithic monuments and is said to be a meeting place for witches.A small train,Le Petit Train de la Rhune which has 3 rails, the third is a cog rail, climb from Ascain during 35 minutes to the summit ,still using the same technology since 1924.
With 360° views,it provides a breath taking panorama of the Pyrenees and Basq coast from Biarritz to San Sebastian and of Landes beaches. It's a very popular site for hikes and walks.
There people can meet goats,Manech ,the Basq mountain sheep and Pottok ponies, small wild Basq horses. The train will run every day from the 28/03/2009 untill the 05/11/2009(return fare :14 euro),www.rhune.com
Then, before lunch we drove to Espelette :we were there, the only tourists at noon(the village is overcrowded in Summer).
Peter cooked a delicious lunch and in a windy and cloudy afternoon,we went to Biarritz to take some pics and I did a pilgrimage in Ilbarritz where I stayed a month with my family, during several summer, 55 years ago!!
We had for dinner a marvellous rabbit with asparagus also cooked by Peter.
The Sunday was rainy and we stayed at home till lunch at Ostalapia farm,a traditional Basq restaurant of Ahetze.
After one more delicious dinner with duck filet and mushrooms(also cooked by Peter!) and a short night,we arrived happy in the morning in Lyon, glad to have met a good guy before he and my daughter move to London next January.
