Ubud is the so called "cultural center" of Bali. This little city with about 8,000 inhabitants and many hostels is located about 20 miles northeast of Denpasar. We took a bus from Kuta and - passing many Arts and Crafts  studios - eventually arrived at the bus station in Ubud. Several agents offered us rooms in various hostels. We decided to go for "Hai Home stay", a beautiful collection of eight little bungalows nestled around a central courtyard. The whole area was decorated with plants, trees and religious structures. The place was clean, pricing low and included tea and breakfast - perfect!
One footnote: We walked from the bus terminal to our hostel. In Indonesia? Sounds crazy, I know. The friendly agent had indeed offered us to give us a ride. But the designated taxi turned out to be a tiny moped. Three adults plus our heavy backpacks? I am an adventurous guy but chose the environment-friendly alternative telling the agent: "Saya ingin jalan-jalan!" (" I want to walk").

In the afternoon we strolled along the main roads Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Wana Wana ("Monkey Forest Road") and Jalan Hanoman. We visited the Monkey Forest and attended a Balinese dancing event. The place was crowded with tourists. Was interesting, though.
