Borobudur
July 25, 2001
Borobudur, a Buddhist stupa located 25 miles north-west of Yogyakarta, is the largest Buddhist monument on earth. The base is 403 feet long.
This amazing Buddhist monument is located about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Yogyakarta. It was built in the 9th century and consists of six square and three circular platforms. The whole monument is decorated with reliefs and Buddha statues. It is 123 meters wide and 35 meters high. We went there by taxi ("bemo"). Quite interesting experience. Since there was no space left in the back of the car we were allowed sitting on the front seat next to the driver. To my surprise I was able to see both the engine (since the panel was gone) and the street below the car (parts of the car body were missing!).
Borobudur is visble from a distance because it has been built on a hill inside the broad Kedu Valley. It is huuuge! We spent the whole morning studying the reliefs and statues.
