In the summer of 1996 my cousin and I travelled through the Southwest. 4,000 miles on the road, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco plus a dozen National Parks including Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly NM, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Arches, Dead Horse Point SP, Bryce Canyon and Yosemite. Glorious days.

San Francisco

"The Rock" hosts the famous former federal prison. Now it is a tourist atttcation. The jail held such notable criminals as Al Capone. It was closed in 1963.
We had contrived a thrilling plan for this day: We would leave our car at the motel and use local public transport! Well, wasn't that exciting. First we took a bus to Fisherman's Wharf. There we visited an old submarine (USS PAMPANITO - SS-383) at Pier 45 which was a unique experience. We also said "hello" to the sea lions at Pier 39. The sound was even more interesting than the view. A trip to "The Rock" was not on top of our wish list. Turned out that it was sold out for two days anyway. So we went downtown and did a little shopping (jeans e. g.).
For dinner we decided to have something "special". We walked to Chinatown and searched the side streets for a restaurant without any tourists. After some minutes we found one. No English menu, just Chinese with some pictures. And only Chinese guests. Great! The athmosphere smelled authentic. And the food tasted well! Afterwards we managed to stop a cable car and finally got a bus back to our motel.
