San Francisco --> Monterey (Bay Aquarium)

Monterey Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

In the summer of 1996 my cousin and I travelled through the Southwest. 4,000 miles on the road, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco plus a dozen National Parks including Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly NM, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Arches, Dead Horse Point SP, Bryce Canyon and Yosemite. Glorious days.

San Francisco --> Monterey (Bay Aquarium)

We spotted these pelicans at the "Ana Nuevo state park".
On our way from San Francisco to Monterey we made a stop at Año Nuevo State Reserve. This place inhabits the largest mainland breeding colony of northern elephant seals. Unfortunately it was high tide so we were not able to approach the seals. So we just wandered arounf a little bit, admired the pelicans and went back to our car.

After having found a campsite in Monterey we directly headed for the "
Monterey Bay Aquarium". Since both of us were big Star Trek fans in those days we knew that this was one of the places where Star Trek IV ("The Voyage home") had been shot. In this movie Captain Kirk and his crew travel back to the late 20th century. They visit the aquarium to find and "steal" two humpback whales and take them with them back to the future. The reason? Saving the world from ruin of course! In the movie the aquarium is located in Sausalito, though.
Back to our visit. We did not went to the aquarium for "Trek"-related reasons anyway. The Monterey Bay Aquarium had and still has an outstanding reputation. That was the reason. My personal favourite was the jellyfish exhibition. Spent one or two hours there, totally fascinated especially by the most dinky organisms. I was so enthusiastic that I even bought a CD with music from the aquarium. I recommend a visit. This place is a must-go!

On the way from our car to the aquarium we earlier had spotted the "
Bubba Gump Shrimp company". Actually it is a restaurant.

I think if I ever had to (or wanted to) move to the States for some reason, I would choose Monterey as my place to live (despite the high risk of earthquakes). The coast is great, the weather as well, the aquarium is worth several visits per year, and as far as I remember, I also liked the city itself. I hope I'll find the time to go there again some day.
