Mariposa Grove, Yosemite NP

Mariposa Grove Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

In the summer of 1996 my cousin and I travelled through the Southwest. 4,000 miles on the road, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco plus a dozen National Parks including Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly NM, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Arches, Dead Horse Point SP, Bryce Canyon and Yosemite. Glorious days.

Mariposa Grove, Yosemite NP

First of all Yosemite NP is famous for its valley, the Half Dome and El Capitan. But Mariposa Grove is worth a visit, too.
Since we had not planned to visit Sequoia NP we headed for another huge Sequoia Grove: Mariposa Grove in the southernmost part of Yosemite NP (there are three groves within the park's boundary but MG is the largest one). The biggest tree here is a Giant Sequoia called Grizzly Giant. It is about 1600-2000 years old (some say 2700 years) and has a volume of 963 cubic meters - the 27th largest in the world. Its basal circumference is 92 feet (28 m)!

Took us some time to get there from Glacier Point. But it was worth it! We rambled around for two or three hours and admired these huuuge living organisms. There are several hundred sequoias growing within the grove. Even the "Fallen Tunnel tree" was very impressive! It was a thursday after Labour day so the park was not very crowded. Indeed most of the time we rarely met any other people!
