In the summer of 1996 my cousin and I travelled through the Southwest. 4,000 miles on the road, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco plus a dozen National Parks including Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly NM, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Arches, Dead Horse Point SP, Bryce Canyon and Yosemite. Glorious days.

Hollywood

For some reason I wanted this shot. So we searched for this famous sign which suprisingly took us about one hour. It was a hazy day, the foreground ws shabby. This is a cutout of the (even less appealing) original image.
Los Angeles. There were two things left on our wish list: Visiting Universal Studios (since both of us were "cinematics") and going to Grauman's Chinese Theatre.
Went to the theatre first. Was a little bit disappointing, though. Ok, we saw the footprints and handprints of our movie heroes in front of the theatre. And we walked along the Walk of Fame. But the quarter had no glitter. Some of the side roads were rather dinky. I do not know what I did expect. But definitely something different.

Visiting Universal Studios made it up for us. The "Waterworld show" was both breathtaking and funny. We also loved the "Back to the future" ride. The air blow from below at the end of the "Backdraft show" really spooked me for a second. Contrary the water ride through "Jurassic Parc" was not very thrilling. Although the final slide...
It was also great to take the tram ride through the movie sceneries. Well, the shark attack was predictable. But it was great to see the motel from "Psycho" and the buildings they were constructing for Jurassic Parc II. And Magnum's Ferrari. And Columbo's car. And the "Back to the future" plaza. And, and... It is a must-go for movie freaks!

If you are a movie lover the "Universal Studios" are a must-go - in spite of the fact that ii is high-priced. When I visited the Studios back in 1996 the entrance fee was about 35$ (2007: 61$).

It is great to have a look at old movie sceneries like the plaza that has been used in "Gremlins", "Back to the future" and many more feature films. Or Norman Bate's house and the famous motel ("Psycho"). Take the train ride!
In addition to that there are some nice fun + thrill rides lake ("Jurassic Parc", "Back to the future"), a Western/Stuntman Show, the famous "Waterworld Show" (Great!) and so forth.

Please note:
Since I visited the Studios back in 1996 the information I give in this review should not been taken for granted.

When we visited the Walk of Fame, I found that my hand fitted exactly into Arnold Schwarzenegger's hand print. Which does not mean that his Terminator (oops, sorry - Governator) hands are similar to mine, which are rather skinny - but add some millimeters around the outline of my hands on all sides, and there you are. :-)
