Gooseneck SP --> Mesa Verde NP
September 4, 1996
Ok, we had seen great landscapes, impressive valleys and fantastic rock formation. Now it was time for a little "culture" trip. Our next destination was Mesa Verde NP. This park is best known for its fascinating Indian cliff dwellings.
When we arrived there we learned that a large wildfire had occured only four weeks ago. 4,781 acres had burned! It was not the biggest fire in the history of the park but an expensive one: cost of suppression was about $2 million.
We set up our tent and headed for the sights. It was fascinating to see all these ancient cliff dwellings. I just had to close my eyes thinking of a proper piece of music and in my imagination it all came to life. Speaking of (wild)life. A rather peaceful deer showed up when we had returned to our tent.
