Canyonlands NP, Island in the Sky

Canyonlands NP Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

In the summer of 1996 my cousin and I travelled through the Southwest. 4,000 miles on the road, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco plus a dozen National Parks including Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly NM, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Arches, Dead Horse Point SP, Bryce Canyon and Yosemite. Glorious days.

Canyonlands NP, Island in the Sky

Famous "Mesa Arch" is located in the "Island in the sky" district of Canyonlands NP.
Just a stone's throw away was our next destination: Canyonlans NP. The "Island in the Sky" district to be precise (we did not visit the "Needles" and "Maze" section). I was impressed by the beauty of the "Mesa Arch" and speechless with admiration when I stood at "Green River Overlook", "Buck Canyon View" and "Grand Overlook". Could have been the view from a plane. Simply unbelievable! This is "Thelma & Louise" country in all its beauty :-D
We made another unforgettable experience there. Well, this time one of the hair-raiser category. On every single day since we had started travelling through the Southwest we had heard of the possibility of "scattered showers and thunderstorms" on the radio. In fact we had rarely seen any clouds until this very day.
Green River Overlook, Canyonlands NP
This did change. While standing at the "Green River Overlook" we spotted a mighty stomfront coming into our direction (see the picture). Like a bolt from the blue - proverbial. Within minutes the sky went black apart from the vivid flashs of lightning. We headed for our car. With lightning speed. Shortly after we had entered our refuge all hell broke loose. It started with severe rainfalls which soon turned into a heavy hail storm. The sound of the hailstones crashing against the roof of our car became earsplitting after a while. I remember trying to talk to my cousin. We had to shout. I have to admit that I was a little bit worried. Faraday cage...hm...
The storm lasted for about 20 or 30 minutes. Then it was gone and the temperature rose again expeditiously. Another 30 minutes later the sky was blue again and no sign of the stom left.
