Silver Falls State Park: Hiking on the Maple Ridge Trail.

After a nice night in our cabin in the woods we awoke to a nice cool morning with promices for another warm sunny day of fall weather.  The sun coming through the trees into the cabin was very nice.

After having a basic breakfast from a convenience store on the road just outside the park we headed out for our morning hike to do the "Trail of Ten Falls" loop.  We had already done the first part of it by the South Falls lodge so we went across the Maple Ridge Trail again and down to the river.  This part of the trail follows the North Fork of Silver Creek and flows in the other direction.  It is in a deep steep sided canyon and you feel like you are DOWN on the river.  The trail is in great shape and the hiking is very nice.

Silver Falls State Park: The trail along the river.
Lower North Falls is a nice falls on the corner of the river and is very scenic.  It is only 30 feet high but nice.   The morning sun made it beautiful.  Just up a short side trail is Double falls that falls down the steep side of the canyon.  Very nice as well.  Next is Drake Falls with an overlook platform hanging over the edge of the cliff.    Not so exciting but still a waterfall with a nice sound of falling water.  Next is Middle North Falls, which is 105 feet tall.  It is very nice from the trail but there is also a side trail leading out to it and behind it.  This fall is not so thundering that you get soaking wet by hiking behind it.  You can actually see the forest through the falling water and that is very nice.  On from there we take the cut across trail to Winter Falls.  Winter Falls falls close to the cliff and is not so thundering.  We then head back towards the parking lot on the Rim Trail figuring it is best to get back to town at a descent time and miss out on a couple of the other falls.  (more reason to come back).  The Rim Trail follows the road at  this point and you can see cars passing on the road but it is in a nice deep dark green forest so it is still pretty nice.

Back at the car we head back home and realise that we had a great little getaway for the weekend.
