Silver Falls State Park: Entrance Sign.

Silver Falls State Park is just about two hours from where I live and I decided it was time to finally go there.  My girlfriend Julie and I had heard about some cabins that could be rented in what they call the Conference Center in the park and that was where we were going to stay for the night.  I had heard a lot about how nice the waterfalls and trails were and was looking forward to the trip.  The weather was unseasonably warm for November and it  was looking like a perfect weekend getaway.

We got out of town and arrived in the park early in the afternoon and decided to take a hike near the main lodge area near South Falls.  South falls is the easy access falls at the park.  There is a big parking lot at the lodge where there are loads of picnic tables and from where the trails lead out into the park.

Silver Falls State Park: South Falls.
South Falls is 177 feet tall and is amazing as it pours over the edge of the rim into the canyon below.  There are trails all around South Falls offering amazing views and one that leads behind it.  We got a map in the gift shop, because the entrance booth was closed for the season.  The lady in the gift shop was a nice lady who works for the park as a volunteer.  We decided to do a 2 mile loop around South Falls and to Lower South Falls and then back up to the parking area on the Maple Ridge Trail.  The trail goes behind the falls and on any day you can be guaranteed to get your hair wet from the mist coming off the falls.  It is pretty amazing to be walking behind a waterfall that big and tall.   From the bottom of the falls we stayed on the west side of the river and continued down to Lower South Falls.

It is about half the size of the other falls but still a nice falls.  The trail looped around behind the falls as well and was a little wetter than the main South Falls.  From there we looped back up onto the Maple ridge trail and enjoyed hiking through the lush green forest to the parking lot.

Looking at our map we could see that there was easy access to some other falls on the east side of the park.  We drove over to the parking are by North Falls and took a little hike over to Upper North Falls.   The trail dead ends at Upper North Falls which is 65 feet tall.  After seeing the bigger South Falls this was not as impressive but on any other day it would be pretty amazing as well.

It was getting close to the time when we could check into our room at the "Conference Center" so we decided to go check out our cabin.

The Conference Center is located back in a quiet section of the park and is in a nice secluded spot.  We checked in at the cafeteria and found our cabin tucked away in the woods among big douglass fir trees.  There are 8 cabins in the area we stayed in and 6 other larger cabins for families in the main area near the Dining Hall and office.  The cabins are basic cabins with just a bed, a sink and a toilet.   Some have twin beds and others a double bed.  (see more about the cabins in my lodging review)

After checking out the cabin we decided to go into Silverton for dinner.
