Me, Darren, Ben amd some old bloke
My mission for today was to see the Grand palace and the nearby temples as well as explore the main backpacker area Khao San road as they were all close to each other but far away from the hostel. I had a get a boat to get up there which I thought was a big hair-raising, but I really don't like boats! It was really really hot today so I struggling before I even got to the palace. Inside the grounds it was packed with tourists which started to annoy me really quickly - it was really beautiful though. By the time I was done there I was way too hot and desperate to sit down so I missed out the temples and headed to Khao San road looking for a bar or something similar. I found a hostel that had a lovely covered bar and restaurant and got some stir fried vegetables and rice and a beer.
Me and old bloke
It was really relaxing until a western women showed up with her young kid and let him run all around the restaurant. Next she started breast feeding him whilst eating her lunch and when he was done she just left it hanging outside her top even when she was talking to the waiter. Not wanting to hang out in a playground any longer I moved on and did some shopping at the market. It was now mid afternoon and I was way too hot to return to the temples so I grabbed a tuk tuk to get to the train station so I could buy a ticket to get to Chiang Mai
in a few days. Well, that 10 min tuk tuk ride was the most fun I've had in Thailand so far! Utterly terrifying but like being in a real life version of Mariocart! Back at the hostel I got talking to a Brit called Darren who was one of the most interesting people I've met on this trip so far - 24 years old and has already had ever job under the sun including stockbroker! I headed out to get some dinner at a nearby place, then Darren asked me and Matt the Canadian if we wanted to head out to Khao San road for some drinking fun.
Matt plays rock, paper, scissors with this awesome little girl
So we headed off: Me, Darren, Matt, an American called Ben and a British couple Rebecca & Dan. We started in an Irish bar - packed full of backpackers but great fun. At midnight we moved on to a club. On the way there we were stopped by a Thai girl of about 8 or 9 who spoke perfect English and wanted to play the boys at thumb war for money. Well, she was awesome and beat everyone! Next she moved onto rock paper scissors and managed to extract about 500Baht from our group! She was incredible! After a couple of hours at the club we grabbed a taxi back to the hostel but decided we weren't finished drinking so all 5 of us (Ben went to bed!) crammed into a tuk tuk and headed to a place called Juicy bar. It wasn't really for us - the only non-thais in the place and we attracted a lot of stares so back to the hostel we went stopping by Familymart to get more beer.
How many people can you fit in a tuk-tuk?
After a game of jenga and scrabble everyone drifted to bed one by one until finally Matt and I called it a night around 5 am.
