Giant panda at the zoo
Good old jetlag had me up at 7:00 this morning (why did I decide to go around the world in this direction?), so I had plenty of time for sightseeing. I asked a member of staff at the hostel whether I would need a jacket as I was unsure how warm California is at this time of year. She suggested I take one, and at first I was glad I did - it wasn't cold but there was a cool breeze that you wouldn't want to stand around in. I walked up to Bilbao Park and by the time I got there, I was carrying my jacket under my arm. The park was lovely and in great contrast to the east coast, with cactii (?!), palm trees, spanish arcitecture and mountains in the distance. I decided to spend the rest of the day in the famous zoo, so set off at around 10:00.
I don't remember taking this photo, so it must have been after the moonshine
As the day went on, the sun got hotter and hotter. By the time I left the zoo at around 2:00 I felt frazzled, so headed back to the hostel for a rest and a shower. It was easily as hot as a good summer day in England, which caught me off guard, resulting in my face being a bit 'rosy' by the time I got back and causing the onset of a brief but violent nosebleed! It was 'Taco Tuesday' at the hostel, so I headed out with some people to eat really cheap tacos and drink really cheap but really strong cocktails. I was more than drunk enough when we returned to the hostel, but I decided to stick around in the little hostel bar and drink more. The guy behind the bar got me to drink a shot on the house - I could tell by the smell it was really strong, but downed it anyway. Everywhere the alcohol touched me was on fire! Laughing, the barman passed me the bottle - it was moonshine - 98% alcohol!! Funnily enough I don't remember anything after that until I woke up in a room that wasn't mine at about 5am and crawled back to my bed!
