Return for Civilization

Our scuba diving boat from Phuket.

After close to a month in Vietnam, Combodia and Laos we felt we were returning to civilization when we came to Thailand.  Ana once again reunited with Starbucks and western retaurants and hotels could be found everywhere.  We saw a movie in a modern movie theatre, ate a blizzard at Dairy Queen and started riding in real taxi's again.  In Bangkok, I also spent my work clothing allowance at the tailor in the hopes that the package of clothes will still fit whenever they arrive in the US a few months ago.

From Bangkok we then moved to about 6 days on the beach.  The cheapest flights were to the part of the country where the rainy season is going on currently and when we arrived the rain was pouring down.  Our hotel had the weather forecase posted when we arrived and the next five days were listed as: rain, periods of rain, periods of rain, rain, rain.

Ana enjoys the water off Kata beach. The waves here were pretty powerful so swimming was pretty limited.
...Luckily weather forecasters here are as good as those in the the USA and we had sunny weather for almost our entire time on the beach.  We skipped all the boat tours that bounce you around from island to island and instead settled for renting two chairs and an umbrella on the beach for 200 baht per day ($6).  Our hotel was $26 a day which included a nice buffet and all but one day when we went scuba diving we did absolutely nothing.  Even scuba diving was a little stressful after I quickly lost our guide 30 meters below water in a nice current.  Luckily Ana's close up view of a leopard shark, a school of barracuda's and a ship wreck made it worth it.

Now we will return to the traveling with visits five cities and 3 countries in the next 10 days, but after that we once again have a rest in South Africa before starting our tour.
