A night out.

During our 15 days in Australia we took a 3 hour flight north to Carnes where a car picked us up for another hour ride up to Port Douglas which was our base for swimming in the ocean, snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, taking a 4 wheel adventure thru the Daintree Rainforest and simply a couple day of relaxation.

If you find yourself in Port Douglas on vacation, Rebecca and I would both highly recommend staying at the Meridian Port Douglas http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g255070-d488249-Reviews-Meridian_Port_Douglas-Port_Douglas_Queensland.html

This hotel (really a serviced apartment) is run by a husband and wife couple who are so very nice and go out of their way to make sure you have a good say.

We had scheduled our Snorkeling thru them and on the day of arrival they checked the weather forecast and suggested we move our Snorkeling date.  When we agreed, John took care of all the details and he was right.  The day we were originally scheduled to Snorkel the winds were high which negatively affects the experience and on the day he moved us to the weather was stunning.  Do however go with the Deluxe room, it is worth every penny.

Poseidon Snorkeling trip:

I was a first time snorkeller but had an amazing time!

This is a full day trip to the Agincourt Reef, taking about 1 and a half hours to get there (and the same back) and stopping at 3 different locations.

We where in the water for about 45 minutes at each of the 3 locations so we had plenty of time in the water.  I of course could have done it for hours more but for my first time it was excellent.  Both Rebecca and I would have preferred a smaller boat which we will look for next time but otherwise this was a fun and exciting day.

Tony’s Tropical Tours

This tour was Rebecca’s favorite highlight of our trip to Australia. Tony (yes the owner but not the original owner), our tour guide, had a passion for everything we visited on the day.  He picked us up at the hotel in a Toyota Landcruiser which seats just 6 people so you get a very personal tour of the Rainforest and Cape Tribulation, of course this means you also get a very personal tour of the person next to you but it’s all good.

We drove thru rivers, up mountains and along the beach.  We stopped for morning and afternoon tea/coffee where Tony brews it up on the tail gate of the truck at a random stop along the trail.  Lunch was provided, steaks on the grill, so all around it is worth every penny.

One highlight was on a beach after the tide had gone out and we chased millions of tiny solders crabs.  They were so cool!

Exploring the rich rainforest ecosystem was so amazing that the 12 hours together with people you didn’t know when you got up in the morning turns out to be a one of a kind adventure you will live over and over again in you mind.

Enjoy the pictures!
