Pier at Hervey Bay
Well...bit of an update. I did indeed spend a day visiting the rainforest which I really enjoyed. We saw some ridiculously huge strangler fig trees, one of which used to have an aboriginal family living inside it. I met up with Dez from TravBuddy who turned out to be staying at the same hostel and knew a dutch guy called Mark who has a car and was planning on heading south. So we spent the last day in Cairns diving on the great barrier reef, which was absolutely fantastic. The sheer quantity and variety of fish was unbelievable and it was a lovely easy day of diving. No currents, just drifting around from coral to coral. People had seen minke whales there the day before but unfortunately we weren't so lucky :(

So then a few pints with Mark, during which time we also met a random irish chap called Ken and invited him along and now we're all in Townsville.

Last night we camped at a funny little town called Cardwell, where there was absolutely NOTHING to do. It was so quiet we found ourselves whispering at times, as though we were in some sort of outdoor gallery. I saw my first kookaburra, which are huge, not to mention noisy! They sound like monkeys laughing. We arrived in Townville just after lunch today and visited the nearest dive shop as we all wanted to dive the SS Yongala, a nearby shipwreck. Its supposed to be one of the best dive sites in the world so imagine our disappointment when we were told only two dive shops go out there and that one of them had a broken boat. So we've got ourselves booked in for monday and in the meantime we'll be spending a night camping on Magnetic Island (so called because it consists of iron-rich volcanic rock which screws up compasses).

Dez, Mark and Ken are all lovely and I'm having a great time so far.

Unfortunately I don't have long in Australia so I won't be able to go much further with them. I'm currently planning on taking a bus down to Hervey bay on Tuesday, seeing Fraser Island on Wednesday and then arriving in Brisbane on thursday. My friend Amy who I met on my diving course in Thailand lives there so I'll be spending the night with her and her boyfriend Simon. Then Friday....flight to Sydney. It's all been a bit of a rush but I'm seeing the things I most wanted to see and I'm really looking forward to New Zealand. Will try to upload my pics in Sydney. Ciao for now!

Yeh I know, sad thing is its not as laughably uncreative as it sounds, it was actually named after a chap called Towns.

Wow, you found a town that's *actually* called Townsville. I used to call my towns that in Sim City when I couldn't think of a better name.
