All by myself....hurrah!
Tour over, I'm now back in Kuala Lumpur. We have our final goodbye meal tonight then tomorrow I'm returning to backpacker-town (street full of hostels) for 5 nights of relaxation. Might fit in a trip to the Batu Caves and a day at the Menara tower (best views of KL) but thats the sum total of my plans for the next five days. Its quite tiring moving yourself from place to place every couple of days, even if it is all organised.
The tour was pretty good, I was a bit disappointed by Teman Negara as I didn't see much wildlife but the Lonely Planet actually says you won't see much because the jungle is too dense, so perhaps I ought to have read that bit beforehand! I loved the Perhentians and we also visited a couple of towns which is something I might not have bothered with had I been on my own.
Kota Bharu in particular was great in terms of food and activities. We went to both weaving and batik factories, which I really enjoyed. The traditional Songket weaving is incredibly intricate to the extent that it takes two people using a loom a month to make a 2m piece of fabric. It was very pretty, but I'm not sure I'd have that much patience....The last two nights we've been at a homestay on an island in a lake near Kuala Kangsar. It was idyllic. The water was completely calm, reflecting the cloud and surrounding mountains, all you could hear were birds and geckos and we were fed like kings with Malaysian home-cooking 3 times a day. I could have stayed there quite a bit longer, it was thoroughly relaxing. I feel like I ought to have a bit more to say about the last two weeks really but its been a bit of a whirlwind and I was kept awake by snoring last night so I'm not much in the mood for lengthy descriptions. I'll just add that Malaysia is great, all the different cultures blend together harmoniously, the scenery is stunning, the people are lovely and I'm already sad I'll be leaving in a few weeks.
