Maxwell, a blind rhino born in Feb 2006
Woke up at 8:30am, washed my hair, then headed down to the breakfast buffet. I had orange juice, pikelets with maple syrup, spiced potatoes, a slice of bread, and a piece of mango + watermelon. Afterwards we stuffed around for ages trying to sort out Bon's luggage then Simon picked us up at 11:40am. We booked him for the day for US$70. We had hoped to see the baby elephant feeding at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (11-12pm daily) but it had ended when we got there. We did get to see two rhinos though! One was born Feb 2006, called Maxwell, and he was blind. He was sleeping. The other was 6yo and very friendly + inquisitive. He had some awful sores on him. We touched his skin + it was surprisingly soft. After the rhinoswe headed to the Langata Giraffe Centre nearby. This cost KSh700 to enter (would have been KSh250 if I'd remembered my student card dammit!).
Bon kissing a giraffe!
The Rothschild Giraffes were amazing! We got right up close and got photos hugging and even kissing them by holding a pellet in our lips! It was so much fun. I bought a pair of earrings and banana batik of a giraffe from the gift shop. We then headed down the road to Birds Paradise Souvenir Shop ( This shop was amazing and filled with every type of curio imaginable. I bought an oil painting by Kima of two women carrying a basket + firewood, 3 screen printed postcards of a drummer, a woman carrying a baby and two flamingos, a small Masai woman wood statue, and a small batik of three women. The bargaining process was exhausting and I hated it. They started at US$250! I got them down to US$87 but I most certainly got ripped off (compared to what I paid EVERYWHERE else in Africa). I was exhausted after that. We then spent the next two hours in shopping malls looking for replacement clothes for Bon, before returning home to the hotel for tea. Passed the massive Kibera slum on the way. After tea headed straight to bed at just after 9:30pm - have to get up at 6am tomorrow to be ready to meet our Intrepid group at 7:30am and then depart.
