Meeting the group
December 21, 2008
Got up at 6am, showered, had same breakfast as yesterday, then at 7:30am boarded our Intrepid truck. In our group is Karl from Germany, Odin from Norway, Tanya + Hamish (Aussie), Jamie + Cameron (Aussie), Jenny + Tammy (Aussie), Adrian and Richard from England, Shelley (Aussie), Trina (Aussie) and Sue (Aussie). I'm amazed at the number of Aussies, considering how much it costs to get here (my airfare was ~$3000 return)! Our tour leader is Jacob, our driver is Sammy and our cook is Susan - they are all Kenyans in their mid-late 20s. We set off straight away for the Masai town of Narok, stopping briefly to take a photo of the Rift Valley at a viewpoint. The stop in Narok was brief then we continued our drive all the way to the Mountain Rock campsite in Sekenani, right near the entrance to the Masai Mara National Park.
We saw wild zebras and giraffe along the way. We set up our tents and had a quick salad sandwich before heading into the park. We saw so many animals! Many of them up close, including elephants, lions, giraffe, Thompson's gazelles, impala, Ugandan cranes, topi, vultures, zebras, buffalo, wildebeest and even meerkats! We drove for ages. The seats in the truck face sideways so I got a very sore back. Got some amazing photos though. The landscape was quite similar to Australia (minus the acacia trees and the animals of course!) but it was still amazing to see, particularly with the animals roaming across it. There were far more elephants and giraffe than I though there would be, and it was amazing to see four female lions dozing together in the sun, no males in sight. I even thought I saw a leopard up a tree but I can't be sure. After the game drive we headed back to camp then had tea which was spaghetti with coleslaw - not bad! After that straight to bed at 9:15pm as it had been a very tiring day.
