The site of Iceland's first parliament Althingi (in use till around 1800), nowadays the parliament is still called the same. This national park and Unesco world heritage site is actually where the American and Eurasian continental plates drift apart with a speed of around 2 cm a year. The valley is about 6km wide and holds Iceland's largest lake.
