the title of this entry isn't because i've made any friends in vang vieng...it's because FRIENDS, the t.v. show, is playing in almost every restaurant! so hilarious. the guidebooks talk about the fact that backpackers are hanging out all over watching FRIENDS....and it is just so true. it's so funny & was the first thing i noticed when i was looking for a guesthouse. just so funny to hear all those familiar voices & storylines in the background as i walked around town looking for a guest house!
i ended up finding what i hope will be a great guesthouse. sara, i think it's the one you checked out but was full. the viengvilla guesthouse (or something like that). i'm literally paying under $5/night. this is by far the cheapest place i've stayed in on my travels!
this town does already have the feel of spring break - i've been here 2 hours & you can just feel it in the air.
the scenery around the town is gorgeous - it's the same huge limestone cliffs & rugged mountains that remind me of southern thailand. i'm going to go get my book & plop down along the river somewhere. or maybe hit one of the bars across the river. we'll see. :)
i ended up wandering down to the elephant crossing, sitting on the deck & getting a drink during sunset. i met fiona...a very nice aussie woman who was traveling with her "hubby" (she just kept saying that, i thought it was cute) who was sick. we enjoyed a couple cocktails together. then, i went back to my cheapy-cheap hostel for the evening. :)
