woman sitting on the street getting ready to give alms

so, a couple things i think are very funny about my stay.  i wanted to see the pak au caves, take a boat trip, rent a bike and go over the bamboo bridge to the restaurant over there.  i never ended up doing any of those things!!!!  just so funny how different plans happened & i didn't make any of the above happen.  i am totally okay with it because i have thoroughly enjoyed all of my experiences...but it was even funny today, on my last day, i was going to do a couple of the above & some other things ended up getting in the way!  i think what's meant to be will be & i just wasn't meant to see the caves, rent a bike, take a boat trip, or go over the bamboo bridge!  (i actually booked a boat trip tonight but it got cancelled because it was raining!!!  i still have a chance to get across that bridge, but we'll see how it goes!!!)

today, i had a wonderful last day.

monks getting alms in the morning
i got up early to watch the "saffron circuit" and listen to the monks do some chanting.  after, i went to saffron, the restaurant along the meekong to get coffee & some brekkie.  i was preparing for my last session at big brother mouse....i had learned my lesson last time & knew i needed to eat something!

on my way to big brother mouse, i saw steve & susan having breakfast so i joined them for a bit.  it's just such a small little town it's so much fun to continue to run into people like that!!  they said they were going to go over to big brother mouse as well!  :)

so, i headed on over & there was kor sitting there, wearing his obama button.  it was just so cute!!!  we had a good last session & koumpha (from the time before) was there as well.

breakfast at saffron
the big word they learned today was WRESTLING.  they were very into it & it was a hard one for them to pronounce...with the R at the beginning and the L in the middle.  anyway, we were high-fiving by the end when they were pronouncing it flawlessly!  :)

i was very sad to say good bye to my new friends.  :(  hopefully i will come back again one day & they will still be here!!!

after that, i headed over to mala travel to say hello to vithoun & san.  san wasn't in yet, but vithoun had just arrived.  fun to see him again of course & we just chatted for awhile.  oh and we had lunch together again.  this time we got sticky rice & then this pork soup thingy.  definitely stuff i wouldn't pick up on my own - but sooo delicious!!!   after that, i decided it was time for me to get my last massage of my time in luang prabang.

restaurant on the meekong
i got another traditional lao massage.  it's the kind that is so good, but so painful at times as well.  my legs are defintiely super tight.  i think with all the walking i'm doing, i'm not streching enough.  i definitely haven't been dong much other exercise (it's just way too hot!) - so it's got to be the walking!  anyway, GREAT massage again & then i was all sleepy & relaxed.  :)

by the time i was done with my massage, san arrived at work so it was fun to see him again.  he has the best laugh & i just love hanging out with him!!

i headed home to pack so i could get that out of the way & have time to do a boat trip (which as i mentioned was canceled).  so, when i was heading home, i decided i'd go across the bamboo bridge & make that happen.

Kor & Koumpha - my Big Brother Mouse buddies
and then, the funniest thing happened.  i was literally about to walk down the stairs to go across it & this novice (monk in training) had just crossed the street & said hello to me.  he asked me where i was going & i said i didn't really know, i was just wandering around, might go across the bamboo bridge & he asked me to walk to his temple with him.  he didn't have the best english, but that's definitely what he said.  so, the next hting you know, i'm walking with this novice & we are attempting to have a conversation.  he ended up showing me his school & where he lives.  i kept asking if it was okay for me to go with him - there are all these rules about women & how we can't shake their hands, etc - so i wanted to make sure i wasn't doing anything wrong!  he kept saying it was okay & then there i was sitting with him in his room (which is basically a table, chair & bed) practicing english.
outside Big Brother Mouse with Kor & Koumpha
it was VERY cool.  he asked me for my e-mail address & wants to keep in touch.  should be very interesting if that happens!!  :)  anyway, it was a very unique experience (and once again, i didn't make it across that bamboo bridge!)

i needed to go home & pack if i was going to make it for the boat trip.  so, i packed & rushed back to mala travel, to then find out that the boat trip was cancelled.  to be honest, i wasn't that disappointed because i wanted to have some time to sit in an internet cafe for a little bit and write about my experiences.  i haven't had time to do so & i really wanted to reflect on what has happened in the past few days!!!  i have loved my time here immensely & i will be sad to leave tomorrow.

my monk friend
i am heading to vang vieng & will be there for 2 days (shorter than i had originally planned, but hey, that's how things have happened!) and then to vientienne for about a day  (again, shorter than originally planned!) before i head to hanoi for habitat for humanity!!!

so now, i'm all caught up once again on my blog.  my plans for my last evening here are to go back to mala travel at 8pm when vithoun gets off of work.  we are going to go get dinner at some lao restaurant that he wants to go to.  then, san will meet us there for a drink at 9pm.  i'm glad i will get to hang out with them one last time tonight!  :)

i still may try to make it over that bamboo bridge either tonight - or first thing in the morning - we'll see!!!

oh - one final very random thought i've had while i'm here.

stuff written inside the monk's living quarters
very random, i'm warning you.  so, before coming here i was in new zealand, australia & thailand where they all drive on the left side of the road.  it was SO strange to switch back to the right side of the road after being on the left for 3 months.  there you have it.  i told you it was random.

MWWWWAAAHHHH!!!!!

okay - quick p.s. update on how my last evening went.  i went out to dinner at a little restaurant outside of town with vithoun & san & a friend of san's.  it was definitely a lao-only place & there was no english on the menu.  beerlao was soooo cheap there, i couldn't believe it.  a large one for 7,000 kip (that's under a dollar for a huge beer!).  anyway, it was a very nice final evening & just perfect to hang out with those guys.
