*****THURS, FEB 5th - GORGEOUS drive, followed by camping adventure*****

So, I got all packed up & ready to go.  I thought I lost my keys for about 15 minutes...unfortunately, something that has happened more than once.  I always know I didn't lose them...it's just more about which pocket of all the bags I have did I decide to drop them into!  I keep meaning to simply put it back in the same place, but man - that is just so much easier said than done.

Anyway, I said good-bye to Mama Peeps because she was heading out to fish again & gave her a HUGE hug!  It was so wonderful to be included in such a neat experience.  :)

And then - after she left - I went up to Robin to see how much I owed for staying there (she said she would give me a good deal since she knew I was a backpacker, etc.

Lake Tekapo! The blue is just unbelievable!
)  ANYWAY - what she said LITERALLY - and I mean LITERALLY made me cry.  She said, "Well, the message is that you should pass it on.  And Lizzie has a great mom".   It was incredibly touching to me that Mama Peeps would do something like that!  Wow.  So very special.  :)

After I got myself together & wiped away my tears, I got in my car & started the drive down to Twizel.  It was going to be about a 5-6 hour drive, so I decided I'd break it up & stop every couple hours or so.  One of those stops ended up being an expensive stop for me though!  I stopped at Knitworks, one of the many places where they have possum/merino wool combo sweaters, etc.

Lake Tekapo
Well, I kind of fell in love with a sweater & a shirt.  I hemmed & hawed about it for awhile & then decided that it was going to be a great souvenir from this fabulous place.  It was weird to try on a sweater in hot weather though...I had a hard time picturing me wearing it because I was boiling - but I do think I will love it!  Mom & Dad, I shipped it to you, so be on the lookout for it!  :)   I didn't think I needed to bring it with me to Australia (where they are having a heat wave) and to Southeast Asia!  :)

I then drove until I got to the Lake Tekapo area.  Oh My God!!!!!!!  I could not get over how beautiful that lake was!!!  It is the BLUEST BLUE I have ever seen.

Wedding in Progress at the church.
It is just so cool.  I took a million pictures because I just couldn't help it.  I kept wanting to capture how spectacular it was!!!  I ended up hanging out in Tekapo for awhile since I didn't think I needed to meet Chris & Heidi until later that evening.  I decided that it would be a good place to do my laundry!  I had so many things to wash, I figured now was as good a time as any!  You definitely feel like you are traveling when you are kind of sneaking into a motel to use their laundry.  Anyway, I did my laundry & just chilled by the lake.  It was a great afternoon.  :)

One funny thing though, I went to go see the famous church that is right along the lake to get the picture of the cross from the inside, looking out over the lake.

Went up to Mt. John Observatory - this is a view of Lake Tekapo from above.
..it's just one of those shots everyone takes.  Well, when I got there - there was a wedding going on, so I couldn't go in.  Was cool to see the wedding happening though & I got a couple pictures of it.  I decided I would go back after my laundry to go in & get that picture of the cross.  Well, I didn't realize it closed at 5pm.  I went back at about 5:15pm.  Whoops.  Oh well - I wasn't going to get the picture.  I can always try again on my way through again.

After my Tekapo-laundry-washing adventure, I continued driving and went up to Mt. John Observatory.  You get these incredible 360 degree views of Tekapo, surrounding lakes & the mountains everywhere.  It was very cool!!!  Then, as I continued driving, I could not believe how gorgeous Lake Pukaki was!!!  That's where you can see Mt.

Wow - Mt. Cook!
Cook across the lake.  Wow!!  I got a few gazillion pictuers of that as well.

After Pukaki, I was on my way to Twizel -  I wasn't quite sure where I was going to meet Chris & Heidi & their group - but I knew it was close to Twizel.  So a few text messages later, I found myself trying to track them down 20k or so outside of Twizel.  The event had actually been moved closer to Ohau & I hadn't realized that!

Anyway, I finally connected with them & we all parked our cars (they had a campervan & there were a bunch of others as well) alongside the road & were getting ready to go to bed...and then, some park rangery type person drove up & told us we had to move.  WHAT?  It was about 11:30pm, it was pitch black & we were in the middle of nowhere.

This is where I slept - in the back seat of my car!
Apparently we were parked on endangered grass.  Huh?  I had no idea something liek that existed!  Anyway, it was what it was....so there we were, driving to find another place to park, in the middle of nowhere, in the pitch black.  We found a spot down the road & parked for the night.  I was going to sleep in the campervan - but space was a bit tight, so I ended up sleeping in the back of my car!  Thank god I got the bigger car (I was thinking of getting a smaller one back when I rented it!) so I had a decent sized back seat!  Not the most comfortable night's sleep - but it honestly wasn't that bad!  I was just happy we weren't endangering any more grass.  So random!!!

*****FRI, FEB 6th - AREA9!!!!*****
I woke up to the most spectacular sunrise.

Sunrise & our "campsite" for the night
This country makes it really easy to get gorgeous pictures, because everything about it is...well, gorgeous!

So, we drove to the entrance to AREA9 & I honestly thought it was going to be a nightmare getting in.  There was a huge line-up of cars & they were going to take time to check every single car (there was no drugs & alcohol allowed & they did a thorough search of every car, so if people tried to get creative on where they were hiding stuff & they were caught, they were kicked out).  But, it was amazing - it really didn't take that long at all & everyone was so friendly throughout the whole process.  Totally painless.

We set up our campsite (I have a bunch of pictures of it) & then got ready to start hearing bands around 12pm.

Ladi6 - I loved them!
I think we had a few hours before the music started so we just wandered around, checked out the different booths & just hung out at the campsite.  The line-up that day was great (from what everyone was telling me...I didn't know a single band playing since it was all NZ bands) and I was excited to check out some NZ music.  I loved listening to a few of the bands....Ladi6 was AMAZING - she was kind of hip-hoppy & she had this awesome (and cute) d.j. with her....loved them!  I also loved Sunshine Sound System & KORA.  So much fun!

In the middle of the day, they had this dirt bike jumping thingy set up.  It was nuts watching these guys jump their bikes & do all sorts of acrobatics.  I have HEAPS (another favorite NZ term) of pictures of them - I only posted a few of them here.

Holy moly!
  CRAZY!

I waited to see KATCHAFIRE until about 11:30pm or so & then I was pooped!  I listened to a couple of their songs & then headed back to the tent.  Since this was a 48-hour music event, the music was going to be going throughout the night....thank god for earplugs!  :)  It was funny, when I was going to sleep I couldn't really hear the music, but I could still feel it (and we were very far away from the stage!).  I eventually went to sleep & got a pretty good night's sleep (thank you Ambien-type product!) but I did wake up around 5am or so to some band screaming.  Or at least that's what it sounded like.

Anyway!  It was definitely a fun day & it was great to meet all of Heid & Chris' friends.

Me & Heidi
They had a whole crew there - Ross, Gretel, Hayley, Carl, Felicity (sp?), & Dave Morgan (not just Dave....Dave Morgan).  It was also very cool to have such a "kiwi" experience - just checking out the crowd was a fun activity!
