*****THURS, FEB 5th - GORGEOUS drive, followed by camping adventure*****
So, I got all packed up & ready to go. I thought I lost my keys for about 15 minutes...unfortunately, something that has happened more than once. I always know I didn't lose them...it's just more about which pocket of all the bags I have did I decide to drop them into! I keep meaning to simply put it back in the same place, but man - that is just so much easier said than done.
Anyway, I said good-bye to Mama Peeps because she was heading out to fish again & gave her a HUGE hug! It was so wonderful to be included in such a neat experience. :)
And then - after she left - I went up to Robin to see how much I owed for staying there (she said she would give me a good deal since she knew I was a backpacker, etc.
After I got myself together & wiped away my tears, I got in my car & started the drive down to Twizel. It was going to be about a 5-6 hour drive, so I decided I'd break it up & stop every couple hours or so. One of those stops ended up being an expensive stop for me though! I stopped at Knitworks, one of the many places where they have possum/merino wool combo sweaters, etc.
I then drove until I got to the Lake Tekapo area. Oh My God!!!!!!! I could not get over how beautiful that lake was!!! It is the BLUEST BLUE I have ever seen.
One funny thing though, I went to go see the famous church that is right along the lake to get the picture of the cross from the inside, looking out over the lake.
After my Tekapo-laundry-washing adventure, I continued driving and went up to Mt. John Observatory. You get these incredible 360 degree views of Tekapo, surrounding lakes & the mountains everywhere. It was very cool!!! Then, as I continued driving, I could not believe how gorgeous Lake Pukaki was!!! That's where you can see Mt.
After Pukaki, I was on my way to Twizel - I wasn't quite sure where I was going to meet Chris & Heidi & their group - but I knew it was close to Twizel. So a few text messages later, I found myself trying to track them down 20k or so outside of Twizel. The event had actually been moved closer to Ohau & I hadn't realized that!
Anyway, I finally connected with them & we all parked our cars (they had a campervan & there were a bunch of others as well) alongside the road & were getting ready to go to bed...and then, some park rangery type person drove up & told us we had to move. WHAT? It was about 11:30pm, it was pitch black & we were in the middle of nowhere.
*****FRI, FEB 6th - AREA9!!!!*****
I woke up to the most spectacular sunrise.
So, we drove to the entrance to AREA9 & I honestly thought it was going to be a nightmare getting in. There was a huge line-up of cars & they were going to take time to check every single car (there was no drugs & alcohol allowed & they did a thorough search of every car, so if people tried to get creative on where they were hiding stuff & they were caught, they were kicked out). But, it was amazing - it really didn't take that long at all & everyone was so friendly throughout the whole process. Totally painless.
We set up our campsite (I have a bunch of pictures of it) & then got ready to start hearing bands around 12pm.
In the middle of the day, they had this dirt bike jumping thingy set up. It was nuts watching these guys jump their bikes & do all sorts of acrobatics. I have HEAPS (another favorite NZ term) of pictures of them - I only posted a few of them here.
I waited to see KATCHAFIRE until about 11:30pm or so & then I was pooped! I listened to a couple of their songs & then headed back to the tent. Since this was a 48-hour music event, the music was going to be going throughout the night....thank god for earplugs! :) It was funny, when I was going to sleep I couldn't really hear the music, but I could still feel it (and we were very far away from the stage!). I eventually went to sleep & got a pretty good night's sleep (thank you Ambien-type product!) but I did wake up around 5am or so to some band screaming. Or at least that's what it sounded like.
Anyway! It was definitely a fun day & it was great to meet all of Heid & Chris' friends.
