*****TUES, FEB 3rd cont... - Meeting up with Mama Peeps in Hanmer Springs*****
The drive from Kaikoura to Hanmer Springs was really stunning. Lots of windy roads through gorgeous hills...I stopped to take a couple pictures, but it's just so hard to really capture how it looks & feels. The 2 hour drive actually went very quickly...I had some awesome music playing (you know - Sister Christian, September, Oh What A Night, Rich Girl - that's what I call awesome music) and I just have really enjoyed driving through this country. Oh - one thing I don't think I mentioned....I'm now down 2 hubcaps. I'm not quite sure where I lost the oher one.
I went into the Hanmer iSite to buy a fishing license for tomorrow. I'm going to go fishing with Deborah Callard, a.ka. Lizzie's mom, a.k.a. Mama Peeps. :) Then, I saw that the Hanmer Thermal hot springs were RIGHT next to the iSite - so I decided to head on in. I thought I'd just hang out for a couple hours before I met up with Lizzie's mom.
The hot pools were kind of like the pools that we swam in at Wally World (Lyndee, Lisa, Joanna, Megan - do you remember those?!?).
Then the most BRIAZZ thing happened. I went into the spa they have there just to see if they had any more massages available for the day. It was 4pm. They said they only had 1 more and it was at 5pm. SIGN ME UP!!! Also, it was $90 for 60 minutes...that's $45! I know in Thailand it's going to be MUCH cheaper than that - but for now, that sounded great to me! So, I hung out in the pools for an hour & then got an AWESOME massage. After my massage, I was so excited to shower there & use all the cool products they had. Also, they had so many towels!!! That's one thing you don't get a ton of traveling around so it felt very luxurious to use TWO towels! :) Ah - the little things!
I then headed over to Riverview (where Mama Peeps is staying).
When Mama Peeps came back, we all sat around with a glass of wine & some chips & just chatted for awhile before dinner.
And did I mention the setting?!? They have a deck with Adirondack chairs (my favorite!) overlooking the most gorgeous bit of land with an amazing backdrop of mountains. I took some pictures at that time of night when the light is really cool, so I'll get those uploaded soon.
I'm now off to bed! I'm excited for my day of fishing with Mama Peeps & John!
*****WED, Feb 4th- GONE FISHING!*****
I had a GREAT night sleep in my fabulously big bed & got up to a delicious breakfast. This place is ridiculous - they have all this great stuff for brekkie on the table & then you can specially order stuff with Oliver. He made me pancakes with bacon & I added a little banana to the mix. Such a great combo, really!
After brekkie, we got all sorted to go fishing!!! Mama Peeps was so awesome for inviting me to join - I was very excited to get a little taste of fly fishing.
We were out fishing from about 10:30 - 4:30. It was beautiful country & was really nice to just be outside. I do have to say, it wasn't the warmest or driest day out there. We definitely got drizzled upon & we waded through a lot of water, so my feet were good & soaked for the whole day. It was so great though....they definitely got me set up with the gear that I needed.
I spent most of the day learning a lot about fly fishing & watching Mama Peeps cast. It was actually quite exciting at times....there was one cast where I watched the fly go out & get chomped on by a fish. It was great! She had it on the line for awhile, but unfortunately they weren't able to "land it" (look at all these terms I learned - impressive, huh?) Turns out there were a ton of rocks downstream & once a fish gets itself wrapped around that, the line typically breaks. That's what happened.
I did get to cast a few times & it was FUN! I think I did pretty well too. Except for the time I was casting into the wind & it looked like the fly was coming straight back at me. That was a bit frightening!
At 4:30ish, we called it a day & started heading back to Riverview. We got a bit of a laugh when we passes a bunch of cows with a HUGE bull. As we drove by, the bull had this kind of crazy-eyed look on it's face...and then we realzied what was going on. As Mama Peeps put it, "the bull was making nice to the cow". It was SO funny & for some reason it just hit me & I couldn't stop laughing.
It was such a treat to get to hang out with Lizzie's mom! I'm so thankful for the experience & we just had so much fun!
When we got back to Riverview, I was so excited to get in the shower & warm up! Robin was SO nice and she offered for me to stay again instead of driving on that night.
So, I was going to be there for one more night which meant I was going to have the pleasure of dining there once again! We all had some wine, some yummy apps that Oliver had pulled together & shared fishing stories. And then there was DINNER. Again, it was unbelievably delicious & beautifully presented. We started with smoked salmon on a yummy chip thingy & guacamole. Then, dinner was this scrumptous lasagna. It was in this tomato sauce that I just could not get enough of.
Anyway! I think everyone was pretty wiped out from the day, so we all went to bed pretty much straight after dinner. I have had such a LOVELY time staying here. I really can't say enough wonderful things about Riverview and Robin & John (the owners)!!! They really do such a first class job. Kendra & Arthur (or anyone else for that matter!), if you are thinking of fishing on the South Island - definitely check them out!!! I think you'd love it!
