Our first view of the Doubtful Sound from our bus ride, after our boat ride (very remote stuff here!)

*****DAY FIFTY (Wed, Jan 21st) - CRUISING THE SHADOWLANDS*****

Made a yummy breakfast this morning - I love to switch up the whole eating out thing.  Of course I did have to go out and get a flat white though!!  OF COURSE!

Anyway, then, the bus for the Doubtful Sound cruise picked me up.  It was quite a schlep to get there.  Bus ride to Manapouri.  Boat ride across Lake Manapouri.  Bus ride to the Doubtful Sound.  Finally to the cruise ship for the Doubtful Sound!

So, the weather was DEFINITELY a bit rainy, to say the least.  They say that more likely than not it's going to be raining, so we definitely got the most typical experience.

Me & the first of MANY waterfalls.
The very cool thing about the rain is that it makes the most AMAZING waterfalls.  There was one point on the cruise where we were literally surrounded by waterfalls.  If you get the chance, I would HIGHLY recommend going on this cruise.  The Doubtful Sound is so much less crowded than Milford and it's just a really cool experience to do the overnight cruise.

Oh - the overnight part.  So funny with the sleeping arrangements.  I booked a Quad room because it's really the only affordable way to do it.  I think it was like $1000 to have your own room or something like that.  ANYWAY, so I was put in a room with Natalie (from Germany), Dominic (from Switzerland) and Henrique (Germany - I think?).  And to say that we were in a ROOM is using a very generous term because there was not very much room at all!  There were four beds - two stacked on top of each other - with a little walkway in between.

Jumping.....
So funny!  I was pscyhed though because they were all very nice & I actually ended up getting along really well with Natalie & Dominic.

So after we cruised through the sounds for awhile, it was time for our activity!  KAYAKING!  It was SO much fun!  Seriously - so so cool - one of the highlights of my trip.  We kayaked up to waterfalls - we saw wekas - and it was just amazing to be out there on the sound.  (ok, it's technically not a "sound" - it's a "fjiord" - just so you know!)  After kayaking, there was another highlight of my trip.....we went "swimming"!!!!  Swimming is in quotes because we weren't really in there long enough to actually call it a SWIM....but we did jump in the water!  They set up a little ladder so you could climb up to the railing & jump off.

That's where we are on the map & it's inauguration day - so I'm wearing my Obama button! :)
WOW.  It was SOOOOOOO cold!!!  But so much fun.  I did it three times.  :)  Our swimming definitely became a bit of a spectator sport as well.  There were about 6 of us jumping off - so a bunch of the other passengers were getting a kick out of watching us do it.  I figured...hey, I'm here....when else in my life will I get a chance to do this....yes, it will be cold....but who cares, I will warm up.  :)  I am so glad I decided to jump on in.  Dominic could not wait to jump in from the second he got on the boat, so he was very happy when we finally had the opportunity!

This cruise was so well done & I have to say - the food was AMAZING!!  They served us soup for a snack that was delish & the dinner was ENORMOUS & delicious.

The little boat that will take us across Lake Manapourit to the bigger boat.
Of course ours was the last table to be called up to the buffet so by the time we got there our eyes were all a bit bigger than our stomachs...but somehow we managed just fine.  :)

Later that night, our room played a game of "Up the River, Down the River" - the card game I learned on the Abel Tasman kayak trip & then headed down to bed.  We were some of the last people to go down to our floor & all the rooms were all right on top of each other....so, since we had to be quiet - of course it became incredibly hard not to laugh at everything.  Natalie was cracking me up because she put Dominic's shoes on the side of her bed because she was afraid she was going to fall out.  I just cracked up at the idea that the shoes would actually stop her.

Lake Manapouri.
Anyway, we all got a really good laugh out of it - finally settled down & then I crashed right away...I think jumping in the water & kayaking took a lot out of me.  Oh and the bottle of wine we drank might have had something to do with it too.

Oh also, important to note - today OBAMA became President of the US!!!  WOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!!!   I missed seeing the inauguration today live....but I was so excited & wore my button all day.  I talked to a lot of people on the ship who were VERY happy.  One woman, Chris, had seen the ceremony earlier this morning & she was GUSHING about it.  SO SO SO SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!
