*****DAY THIRTY-FOUR (Monday, January 5th) - A DAY OF LEARNING*****
I learned two very important things today...
1) Always read a map CLOSELY when you are driving in a country with which you are not familiar.
2) Always remember to charge your iPod before going on a long road trip where there isn't good radio reception!
So on #1, I ended up adding 70k to my trip today because of a wrong turn I took! I was planning to make it to Greymouth, by way of the West Coast, but I took some inland route by mistake. SO, I back-tracked because I really wanted to drive down the west coast and so I ended up staying in Westport instead of Greymouth.
And #2, I was in the car for a LONG time today without a radio or iPod or anything. I learned that I really am a pretty bad singer. Don't get me wrong, I love singing & I'm not going to stop. But man, I really can't hit some of those notes. I sang so many random songs it was funny. I've definitely been channeling my Camp Che-Na-Wah days and I've been singing so many songs that I can't even believe I remember. There's the good old "If I had a hammer", "Rufus Rafus Johnson Brown" and "I'm going to teach you a new word today"...but I've also remembered some camp songs like the one to M*A*S*H (We think of all the years gone by, how we laughed and how we cried...the visions of our childhood years, reflected in each falling tear.
Also, some of my high school cheers have been coming to mind. Yes, I was a cheerleader.
ANYWAY, I had a nice run in the morning on Golden Bay, followed by a DELICIOUS breakfast at Wholemeal - but I do have to say that the highlight of my day was that I got to "call in" and see Kelly, Aleisha and Tanika for lunch today!!! It was wonderful to see them & I really hope that we will stay in touch!!
So - I got to a decent enough hostel in Westport and it was EMP-TY! Seriously, there was barely anyone there it was crazy.
Oh - I forgot - the other "highlight" of my day was when Nathan and I were watching Wedding Crashers & this guy came out of his room in a t-shirt, a towel slung over his shoulder & these bright green underwear with designs all over therm. They seriously looked like a pair of underwear that a 5 year old would wear. We were dying! He said hi to us & then walked down the hall. We really didn't know what to say or do - we were just trying not to laugh too loud. Anyway, then after a little while, he came back - in the underwear & went back into his room. Later, he actually came out and joined us to watch the movies...thank god he decided to put some shorts on. Not sure what that was all about - but I'm sure it had to do with some cultural difference. Anyway, it was very funny nonetheless!
