After leaving Kaikoura at the crack of dawn we continued on HW1 until we hit Christchurch. As mentioned before, this city isnt for me. I dont like the way it reminds me of home...
Anyway, we had an Aussie in tow with us during this trip, Catrina, and she looked at NZ wide eyed and bursting with excitement, so we did have a pit stop. We became tourists, taking the tram around the city (which I secretly enjoyed) and then got some lunch and other supplies. My mind was already on getting to Queenstown and surprising Kat; luckily it wasnt long before we were back on the road heading south once again.
Just before the town of Geraldine we turned off onto HW79 where 'Elise' began to wind though more and more deserted and rural roads.
The following morning was our first real opportunity to look around the 'village'. There wasnt anything commercial of interest to me.....but there was Mt John. Now THAT looked cool, set right beside the incredible blue of the Lake. Myself and Katrina the Aussie got our sights on the summit straight away and set off on foot after having a quick cup of tea and some breakfast. The walk up filled me with anticipation, I knew it was going to be magnificent, and I found myself trying not to look behind me until we reached the top. About 40 minutes later we made it.... the photos don't, could never, do it justice.
Our climb on Mt John remains my most magical south island memory, a sight of the heavens, of pure-ness and nature at its absolute best :)
