ERCOLANO
December 29, 2006
Ercolano(Herculaneum) was a smaller but wealthier town than Pompeii(it is thought to have been a seaside resort for wealthy Romans) and its excavations are less
known than the Pompeii's ones but they complete them having a better state of conservation.
Since it is less famous than Pompeii,it can also be more pleasant to visit during the overcrowded
tourist season.
The ancient Ercolano has not been completely unearthed,a large part of the old town lies under the modern town.
The city was not struck by lapilli and ashes, but by a stream of mud(piroclastic fluxes) flooding down the slopes of the Vesuvius,
that sealed the old town under more than 20 m of tuff.
